I don't think that all meat eaters feel the need to criticise... But of those that do I have found that they generally fall into two camps.

1. Ignorance:

I tend to think of these people as little sheep - they just follow the flock. They generally don't even know why they mock or criticise, they have just seen someone famous mock vegetarianism, or perhaps they've seen a meat advert on TV and believe its gospel!. This group think that vegetarians are weak, or ill and ask "Where do you get your protein?".

These people have no real ability to listen to reasonable arguments about vegetarianism and its benefits and I personally tend to just ignore them. If you react to this type of person, then they come up with absolutely ludicrous arguments for eating meat like: "what would happen to all the cows if we stopped eating them, they would take over", or "God gave us the animals to slaughter and eat, so we should enjoy them"... This list is endless!

2. Guilt:

Perhaps these are the ones that criticise the most! They will generally be more intelligent and know deep down that vegetarianism has many benefits to health, the environment and society but they are too weak minded to leave the 'norm' and become vegetarian. I always quote Einstein, Pythagoras, or Shaw to these kinds of people when they try to mock as they can't argue agains their intelligence :)

"Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet." - Albert Einstein.

"Oh, come! That boot is on the other leg. Why should you call me to account for eating decently? If I battened on the scorched corpses of animals, you might well ask me why I did that."- George Bernard Shaw, (The Vegetarian, 15 January 1898)

"As long as Man continues to be the ruthless destroyer of lower living beings he will never know health or peace. For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love." - Pythagoras

Sometimes it may also be worth pointing out to these people to stop being so 'narrow' in their viewpoint and that a few Billion Hindu's, Buddhist's and Sikhs and others are completely vegetarian from birth and have been for thousands of years... Eating meat is NOT the norm everywhere!

i think they are the ones that should be mocked and criticised, because they are murdering poor, innocent animals. I am the only one in my family thats a vegetarian and its tough but they really don't understand how "offensive" i find it when we are sitting at the table and they all have meat on their plates.

In this forum, its because they are able to hide behind thier internet anonimity and they care-less about our morals. It might as well be train spotters, body builders, kit car enthusiasts. they don't care, they just want to insult SOMEONE.

In real life, its because thy are just looking for a chink in our armour because they are scared of something they don't understand or they are guilty about the pain, suffering adn death they pay for when they buy meat. I've never seen a meat-eater who criticises me be able to hold up a decent REAL objection to my diet.

either way, i wish they would get a life and bugger off.....i went out with a vegan for lunch on Friday, boy did she get the 3rd degree in a resturant when she asked for a baked potato with no butter...v strange attitude these meaty people have.

Well the first thing I could not help notice was how much you and " nos " look alike .. you look like sisters .. yet you want to know why meat eaters criticize and mock ..she responds with a bleeped profanity .. perhaps to a meat eater they perceive you hate them .. ..you of course do not hate meat eaters the person .. .. you may hate what they are doing .....on the other hand they do not hate you the person but what you represent .. it is hard to go backwards after you have learned the truth , and hard to see it for those who haven't .. when people are scared they will become defensive .. and act like a scared cat who puffs up to look huge and hisses and may even take a swing at the air to fend off his would be potential attacker .. that is what they do and how they see it .. as an attack they need to ward off .. ..

The reverse applies equally - vegetarians do not just mock, but absolutely condemn meat eaters, often within the pages of Yahoo Answers.

Any chef of reasonable quality will not only be trained in preparation and presentation of food, but also in basic nutrition.

I've given up commenting on the Vegatarian pages on this site - all I get is thumbs down and, frequently, abuse.

All my menus have had an extensive range of vegetarian dishes and my vegetarian food is cooked with the same insight and skill as any meat dish. I do no vegan, as I fear lawsuits in peddling malnutrition.

I will cook what you like to eat. I leave it up to vegetarians to question why the human has teeth that have no other use than to rend meat, and as to why the human body is unable to assimilate two vital amino acids from vegetable protein.
