Ok, so I'm a 25 year old male, 250 pounds, don't exercise much, and you can imagine my diet. Father, also overweight (BMI < 35) has diabetes. Everyone is telling me that I'm at "very high risk" of getting diabetes *soon*, although I routinely check my blood sugar with dad's home testing kit and my results are normal: fasting glucose is usually 80-92 mmol/dl and nonfasting glucose is: 87-98 mmol/dl. So, I do not have diabetes; yet, I understand that over a course of years and years I may develop progressively higher blood sugar, I'm assuming that for the time being I am not going to, as in next week or next year?

I think your question deserves this response: You seem very informed. Most people, even some diagnosed Diabetics, don't have the drive to actually and regularly check their sugar. I think you have what it takes to understand Diabetes, as you have shown, and to do what it takes to lessen any risks you do have. Your family history and current weight are not guarantees of Diabetes, of course, but you are right to consider them as factors.

Hello Templeton,
Congratulations on having dodged the bullet so far. That's a blessing. It sounds as if you're quite knowledgeable about diabetes. That's a good thing. But knowledge does not equal awareness.
It would be better to slowly start modifying your lifestyle to decrease the risk. Not overnight. If you really enjoy eating it's hard to give up some of the pleasures and become some kind of a food nazi.
Since a primary family member has the disease, your risk is very, very high. If you knew a gun was pointed at your head and that the trigger WAS going to be pulled some time soon and that you would suffer the traumatic results... do you think maybe you might consider doing something to decrease the damage? That's pretty much the way I see it.
I HATE diabetes. I was a nurse and it broke my heart to see so many people having to have their legs amputated because they were rotting off, needing wheelchairs, struggling with the pain of learning to use a prosthetic leg, having kidney failure and needing to keep going for dialysis (which isn't fun), going into crisis with uncontrolled blood sugar, increased risk of infection and blindness, and so forth. Not to mention having to stab yourself with a needle and get insulin into your body 3,4,5 times a day. It happens. That can be your reality.
Think of your pancreas (the organ responsible for blood sugar) as being a bank account. You started life with a little less insulin in your account because of your heredity... and you've been spending your insulin freely on goodies while the insulin account has been dropping. You know the account will be drained dry at some point and the bank will foreclose on you. That's kind of what you're looking at. If you decrease your spending and start saving a little, it will postpone or perhaps even prevent a bounced check.
It's really worth it to modify your lifestyle! You're young and have a life ahead of you. You want to marry at some point? Have children? Watch them grow up? Be able to play catch with them and chase them down the hall in gales of giggles?
Dance with your lady close to you?
When it comes to a choice between a life and a doughnut, it might be better to make a choice that gives you a more permanent pleasure.
My best wishes for you...
Tara

You are at risk being that your dad is diabetic and that you are over weight but your blood sugar is GREAT!!! Don't sweat the small stuff. And don't lose no sleep over it. I don't know where my diabetes came from! I don't know any of my blood relatives to have diabetes. I do have a 12 year old daughter that monitors her blood sugar because hers has been running a little high. The other night hers was 170. But try not to worry about it. Just stay aware. Good luck to you and your dad!

Family history and obesity are definitely high risk factors and it could happen at anytime, the more wear and tear on the body the more likely sooner than later. Take care of yourself and start getting some factual information now. I'm sure you know that 250 pounds unless you are seven feet tall is to much. Good Luck!

I cannot specifically say you will become a diabetic, but from every thing I have learned, obesity and lack of exercise are contributing factors. I would be concerned and take action while you are still young.

Not sure why you are asking this question. But it sounds like you
are waiting until you have diabetes to change your lifestyle.
Why wait until you have it to do something about your health?
I would also be worried about cholesterol and heart disease.
Do something now before it's to late.

RESONABLE RESPONSE,ON YOUR PART. NOBODY --IN MY FAMILY--WAS EVER DIABETIC, AND I MADE IT 56 YRS,UNTIL--WITH A OVERLY AGRESSIVE SWEET TOOTH JONES, AT NIGHT,I BECAME DIABETIC, AND I ALREADY HAD HEP C, SO THE ONLY LOGICAL CHOICE,
WAS TO DO "ALL" NECCESSARY, AND UNNECCESSARY RESEARCH, THEN I DID A "TOTAL"
DIET MAKEOVER, SPLENDA, DIET DRINKS--(SODAS),
AS WELL AS CRYSTAL LIGHT PUNCH,AND WHITE POULTRY MEATS, WITHOUT THE SKIN, PREFERABLY BAKED,AND AN AWFUL LOT OF SPRING WATER (GOT TO STAY HYDRATED). GOOD LUCK.
