Most cities in India have extreme temperatures where Energy saving eco-friendly concepts as rediscovered by Laurie Baker are best suited yet there seem no takers??
In fact the Governments should offer subsidy to encourage this construction technology.

Um. As an undergrad architect, the cost would be in the millions if not billions and there is something that architects find misleading. It's called Green washing. Green washing can be defined by thinking eco friendly technology can make your home look green. It takes more than solar pannels to make a house green. You can try passive solar design but in india, that's more of a warm tropical climate. Passive solar design and all that eco friendly devices wouldn't work that well.

It would be great if people thought changing their lifestyle and making their houses more energy efficient. If people thought buying solar pannels is being eco friendly, that's where it goes wrong. PV cells are expensive and have a higher embodied energy.

Another thing is that.... it's not the technology that should do the changing... it's us humans that need to do the changing. Take for example, you have a house with an incandescent light systems and one with flourescent t5 lighting. In both scenarios you don't save much energy because it depends on how much activity you have or do. The person with the incandescent lights will turn on the lights less often than the person who has energy efficient lights but the person with the t5 lights will keep their lights on depending on how rich they are.

Lack of government knowledge and political will on environmental issues is the key. UK, China has set energy an environmental goals, while India is not even considering anything. With such an attitude, how can we draft and implement policies aimed at eco-friendly concepts.

May be Menaka Gandhi should become the PM, then may be something can happen, but certainly nothing will happen so long as Sonia Gandhi is in politics.

I think that this is like a lot of other problems, cancer, poverty, homelessness, etc. Lots of individuals have great ideas, but he almighty dollar is in charge in our great nation. having a great idea might get you recognized and you might win an award, however, if utilizing your idea means taking money away from big business and big brother, then you can forget it going far at all. It is nfortunate that all of our politicians are driven by the greedy businessmen here in America and abroad, and that the good and welfare of our beautiful earth is not on the list of priorities. I do agree that the Eco-friendly alternatives seem more costly, but that is because the big industries can afford to make it more affordable to be less friendly on the environment, while smaller more earth-loving companies are struggling economically to make it and to fight for our futures.

Actually in reply to greyghost GW has one of the most fuel efficient houses in the U.S., while the self claimed #1 environmentalist Al Gore uses more energy in a month than 25 average American houses. Now to your question, I believe that cost is the # 1 reason most people don't use eco-friendly concepts when building their houses.

If those companies that produce the products that make a home Eco-Friendly don't have to make their first billion in one year, you would see more people build them. I know that money is saved as well as energy in the long run, however too many people live paycheck to paycheck and can't afford a $200,000+ home. They have to go with the more inexpensive materials and items, to be able to afford food and a tank of gas.

Yes, they should make Eco-Friendly improvements to ones home tax deductible, for the entire amount, and not made to spread cost over years. And for those that hate the rich, cap the write-off at about 40,000 a year.

But the Democrats will never do this, they view the money as theirs, not the peoples.

Encouraging Eco-Friendly homes is component of a a larger change that needs to occur...
First, it is necessary to influence our culture for sustainability- really get into the grit of environmentalism in a logical manner in order to expose our vulnerabilities and how we may still have time to change the vicious cycle of destruction. THEN, actions will be possible, such as eco-friendly homes, all organic produce, lean manufacturing, and general social responsibilities.
