Those numbers are (readings) are too high, specially the upper one (172/84) called as systolic BP, & so is his downward (Diastolic) reading, It should have been in the maximum in the range of 120/80. Is he having any symptoms?
Take him to an ER immediately and get his readings down before it's too late.
As far as his age is concerned he is the range of HTN (hypertensive) side, and he can have stroke or myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack).
Please evacuate your husband to nearest ER.

Hi. I have always been told that a good healthy blood pressure is 110/70. Of course yours can be slightly higher than this and be okay too. The top number, systolic measures the blood pumping into the heart and the bottom number, diastolic, measures the blood as it pumps out of the heart. Some people, like me have a normal low blood pressure. Normally runs anywhere from 86/60 to the 90's/70. This can cause dizziness and a feeling like you are about to pass out if you stand up too quickly but they say it's ok. There are many conditions that can cause an elevated blood pressure...pain, anxiety, stress, being overweight and many more. If you have high blood pressure it is extremely important to keep a regular check on it because if it gets too high it can lead to strokes and heart attacks. There are many ways to keep it under control such as diet, exercise, stress management, weight loss, etc. There are also some really good medications out there that can help too. Your dr. should discuss all of this with you. I have known people that had very high blood pressure and just by living a healthier lifestyle they have brought it to a normal range.

172/84 is pretty high. Some people have this as a chronic condition and some as an acute condition. The acute condition, that is if the BP doesn't usually run that high then suddenly starts running that high and the person getting symptoms such as dizziness or headaches, he needs to be seen right away as he is at risk of stroking out. If he has always run that high he still needs to see MD as soon as he can to get BP medications to lower it - this condition is also a risk for strokes.

You should read "The Blood Pressure Solution" (also available in electronic format, watch the video presentation here: http://www.fixbloodpressure.com ) It's a very comprehensive step-by-step book that walks you through the natural remedies of high blood pressure. It provides you with a lot of information on what foods to eat, how you can acquire and prepare these foods, how you can change your lifestyle for the better, how to eliminate the toxins from your body, how to reduce stress, how you can check your blood pressure level the correct way etc.
The book is amazing in that it not only lowers your blood pressure without the help of medications; it also aids you in having a life that is healthy, happier, and less stressful. This book chanced my life.

130/80 is a good b/p. If he is overweight he needs to lose weight. Cut the salt in his diet, and he needs to lower stess. When the blood pressure is up too high the heart is not resting. Prolonged high blood pressure can lead to strokes or kidney disease. He needs to go to the doctor and get a full physical and some blood work. If he is put on medication, then he needs to take it faithfully. Men can be so hard-headed. Best of luck to you both.

Newer guidelines require the BP to be 100-110/60-70. Regular exercise, 20 minutes per day, weight loss, eliminating carbs (sugars and starches from the diet) are three of the best ways. If this doesn't help,he will need to start on BP medication to prevent his heart muscle from overworking and losing heart muscle.
