Valacyclovir (band name: Valtrex) is used in the treatment and suppression of genital herpes, shingles, and cold sores. Valacyclovir is not a cure for herpes virus infections.
Valacyclovir is an antiviral drug. It slows the growth and spread of the herpes virus so that the body can fight off the infection. Valacyclovir lessens the symptoms of these infections and shortens the length of time you are sick.

Besides genital herpes, Valtrex is also used for cold sores and shingles. Cold sores are caused by a virus called herpes simplex I (as opposed to genital herpes, which are caused by a related virus, herpes simplex II); shingles are caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same one that causes chicken pox, or a virus of the same family.
