(1) It will protect the feet from injuries that will lead to infection and subsequent amputation. Due to diabetic neuropathy, he will not feel if a pin is pricked on the sole of the foot.
(2) The circulation of blood in the extremities such as feet and hands are poor for diabetic patients. So he may feel coldness. Stocking may keep the feet warm.

For me, my diabetes has affected the circulation in my legs. If I sit too long, my legs swell up, and my ankles especially get all big and almost hang out of my shoes.

It is quite uncomfortable. But it is also dangerous. Swollen legs indicate that blood is not moving out of my feet and legs, and it can get sort of "stale" and prone to infection.

The tight stockings help to "squeeze" the tissues so excess fluids do not collect there. It also sort of "helps" your veins support the blood while it is being pushed back up your legs and back to your heart. Without the squeezing effect, the veins sort of fall back or relax too much, and the little valves inside don't close all the way. Diabetes weakens the veins.

It weakens arteries too, which is why diabetics are warned about strokes and things. If your blood pressure gets too high, your weakened blood vessels will have issues, and may even begin to expand like a very tiny balloon and pop.

Once again to all the previous would be do gooders: if you do not know something or know something partially do not give advice.
Here is the answer: diabetes affects the blood circulation in the extemities. Stagnant blood may cause infections by anaerobic bacteriae (known as sugar heel or sugar feet). These infections are difficult to heal (because of the chronic high glucose levels in the blood) and may lead to gangrene and eventually amputation of the limb. A diabetic patient MUST as his/her daily routine daily check his/her lower limbs for infections and wear special stockings and even special shoes (very soft and friction free and one size larger than normal). And he/she must walk....walk...walk....to burn off the sugar. Good luck. Dr House.

Something to do with the circulation of blood in their legs. I'm not exactly sure either, but my mother-in-law wears them sometimes and she can tell a difference when she doesn't.
