We or i didnt see pizzas till i was around 14 and they were only the little frozen buiscuty discs with a spread of what tasted like tomato soup and the tiniest amount of a cheese like substance. Not even close to being worthy of being called a pizza.FROM UK.

I'll be 43 in September, but we did have pizza in our area. We just didn't have it too often because I lived out in the country in the middle of nowhere, and the only other choice we had was the frozen pizzas. Since there were no microwave ovens back then, it was hardly worth the time it took to heat it up in a conventional oven.

But anyway, to answer your question, one of my favorite dishes from my childhood was Macaroni & Cheese (with ham pieces). Since I'm a cheese fanatic, this meal was perfect for me. Especially my dad's recipe. He wasn't a very good cook for the most part (my mom was great at cooking), but it's the one dish that he did perfectly.

Great, now I'm hungry! Thanks a lot Patsy!! LOL

huh? You're 43 and there wasn't pizza? I'm 63 and there was pizza. Just must be one of those things you didn't have where you lived. As a kid we went out for pizza all the time.

It's hard to choose a favorite... my mom was such a wonderful cook. So I have many, many favorites. There's a story that goes with Mom's lasagna. She came from a little unheard of town in Massachusetts, and had never even heard of Italian food, no less lasagna. She moved to CT and asked some friends to dinner. She made it their choice. One friend who was Italian from strong Italian roots. He suggested lasagna. Of course Mom being Mom, she said "sure!" Then she started looking for recipes. Between what she read, and her natural abilities and common sense, she created the dish, and it was a hit (knowing Mom, there was no recipe followed). "The best lasagna I ever had." That was that... and a wonderful lasagna it was! Everything she made was amazing, but she made a wonderful Italian sauce and meatballs.

Sorry. I'm sure it was more information than you wanted, but your question brought back memories of that story... just had to tell it.

Hi Patsy, I am 47 so I remember that time! Wow, Toast toppers..... You are so right! My mum used to do the most amazing roast dinners. We were never sure whether to climb it or eat it! My mouth is watering as I think about it. She also did something she called a 'corned beef beano' corned beef cooked up with diced potatoes and baked beans . Real comfort food.

Fave takeaway was curry and it still is.

All the best, Paul

It's funny how nostalgia affects the way you remember meals from your childhood. My mother really didn't enjoy cooking and mostly didn't spend that much effort at it, but on special occasions she would cook what she called "goulash"--basically a mixture of minced meat, macaroni, tomato paste and vegetables. I don't imagine that it could have been all that delicious, but the fact that she only made it once in a while, and that she took the time and trouble to make something special, made it delicious indeed as far as we were concerned. That was some 35 years ago and the recipe went with her to her grave, but I'll never forget my mom's "goulash nights". :)

I had my first taste of pizza in Stockton California around 1950 -52. I remember because I wasn't driving.
But it was more bread than pizza (very thick topped with sauce and lightly sprinkled with cheese.
But my mom cooked a leg of lamb lots of onions mushrooms and potatoes with brown gravy. But the left over made me ill,, I couldn't stand the mere smell.

As a person who has lost over 50 lbs., I recommend that you don't use the cheese. Cheese is high in calcium and is also high on saturated fat and cholesterol. Forget about the salt in cheese, cheese is loaded with it. Salt retains water. If you drink anything or eat anything, the water will stay in your body and you will become bloated. I also recommend that you use low salt tomato sauce and just make a plain no cheese pizza. Keep up with the healthiness. Good luck.
