Some insulin is available over-the-counter. Most people don't know that, even doctors. It is done that way because people travel to different states and countries and need it to live. How could a pharmacist not sell insulin to someone with a critically high blood sugar, even if he didn't have a prescription?
Here is a previous question about that:

There are several websites in Canada that say you can purchase insulin without a prescription and they ship to the US. http://www.77canadapharmacy.com and http://www.canadapharmacy.com

However insulin such as levimer and some others may still require a prescription. I would call them to make sure they will ship the type of insulin you are in need of.

As far as I know you can buy insulin and insulin syringes over the counter (usually kept in back with the pharmacist...just have to sign for syringes). It may vary from state to state, but in my state, that is the way it is . Go ask a pharmacist.

No dear.

It is because insulin can be misused in sports (yes, causes hypoglicemia but is considered an anabolic too)

Bet you will use it only for your diabetes, as much as the doc told you and not a unit more but the only way to difference the potential need and correct use from the misuse and abuse is the prescription.

It may depend on the state. I used to get insulin for our dog without an Rx (of any kind) from WalMart & Sam's Club.

I doubt it, as insulin has to be kept cold. Somebody seems to be working on it though. But you'd still need a doctor's prescription.
