Can you help me? I have district Solo and Ensemble competition tomorrow! I am taking a vocal solo, a trombone solo, am part of two choral ensembles and a brass quintet. Obviously, it's VERY bad that my breathing will be obstructed. Any quick fixes to make things go more smoothly tomorrow?

Well I sing and perform a lot so this is something I looked into myself. What I find works best for me is, standing in the bathroom with the shower as hot as you can get it breathing in the steam. You could even place one of those new things by vicks in the shower it is a vapor action soother that is great for sore throat and to help you get rid of the stuffiness.

Now those are only quick fixes you are going to want to take a medication wether it be Tylenol cold or whatever over the counter you prefer I like tylenol cold and sinus.

Try to rest your voice and dont let your throat become dry. Drink lots of fluid and use a humidifier. At night I keep a cup of water next to my bed so I can keep my throat moist all the time. Thats when you have the most problem is if you let it stay dry for a long time it is harder to heal.

Hope this helps and the best of luck to you!!!!

Try steam inhalations: dissolve a teaspoon of Vick's Vaporub
in about 2 cups of boiling water, in a small saucepan. Cover your head with a towel and hold your head close over the vapours. Take slow deep breaths till water cools and vapours diminish. Take at least 20 breaths. In place of Vick's you can use Friar's Balsam, same amount, same volume of water. Be careful with boiling water!!! Then go to bed to sleep
Scratchy throat: cough syrup or lozenges, use as indicated.
Systemically you could try Actifed Plus, good for runny nose teary eyes and clogged sinus.

For your nose you can use a product called breate right nasal strips. They lift open nasal passages to help you breate better and reduces snoring.

For your throat during the day gargle your thorat with salt water and at night when you shower use the Vick's Shower Soothers.

One of those VICKS Inhalers will give you temporary relief for your stuffed nose (you can find it in any grocery store/Duane Reade/rite aid), but for your throat, I have no advice for that.

Good luck, hope tomorrow will go smoothly.
Get better soon

try gargling warm salty water. it always works for me. oh, and tea w/honey. another thing that might work is Vick's Shower Soothers, u'll find those in ur pharmacy. u get into ur shower, put the lil tablet down on the floor of ur shower ,and let the shower melt the tablet. it'll release soothing vapors. good luck!!
