I've been questioning whether or not I'm diabetic and I bought a glucose tester today and it said my blood sugar level is 45. What does that mean?

I did read the instructions right and was very precise in following each step correctly. I researched my symptoms and it seems as though I might have hypoglycemia. I'm going to get an appt. for next week to have the test done.

If you have other symptoms of diabetes then go to your doctor and get tested. Frequent urination , excessive thirst, slow healing of minor cuts or scrapes.

Glucose testers are not extremely reliable on a single test. If you get a small sample or a contaminated sample then it can be wrong.

A normal person will have a blood sugar level close to 100 at any time . The body releases sugar or insulin to keep it balanced. A 45 is very low blood sugar and you may have symptoms if it goes lower. Mental confusion , weakness are two common symptoms.

There are so many other factors that you have to include:
1. what time of day did you take your blood
2. how long since you had eaten when you took your blood
3. did you read the directions on the machine and set it properly

Those are just a few that come to mind. I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant for my son and ended up having to use insulin during that pregnancy, there are so many factors you have to consider. First thing the number you gave of 45 is low this would mean that you might have low blood sugar. I would ask your doctor about doing a complete blood work with you fasting. If your test has a certain number then they will have you fast again and do more blood work where you are there for about 3 hours and have to drink a nasty sugar drink and have your blood after each time you drink that. There are so many other signs of diabetic that maybe you should look up some of the symptoms that you are having that lead you to think that you are a diabetic.

Your fasting level is well above 126, which is the minimum for diagnosing diabetes. There is no such thing as a "port lunch" reading. I suppose you mean "post lunch" - i.e. after eating lunch. That 171 reading is above the normal limit of 140 after meals, but far below the level of 200 which would indicate diabetes. In other words you have two conflicting readings. The 154 says you already have diabetes, but the 171 would suggest you are only borderline - also known as prediabetic. Because of the conflicting readings, and also because diabetes is never diagnosed based on just a single blood test, you should see your doctor and schedule a follow-up test to see where you actually stand. Until then, you have to realize that both the 154 and 171 readings are above normal. Regardless of whether you are actually diagnosed with diabetes, your doctor will most likely want you to cut down on the amount of carbohydrates in your diet, exercise more, and lose weight if you are overweight. Those are all good suggestions for dealing with high blood sugar. Good luck and best wishes.

What everyone is saying is true-- that means your blood sugar is very low, and you should eat something sugary immediately and follow it with some protein about 45 min later. What they haven't said that you're probably wondering about is that the fact that you're blood sugar is 45 means that you're almost certainly not a diabetic. When a diabetic is untreated, their blood sugar gets high, not low. However, you may be hypoglycemic. It sounds like something is wrong with your health, and you should see a doctor as soon as you can.

Be sure that you have read the instructions for your new monitor carefully. The monitor should have come with some test fluids to calibrate it before use. Try calibrating the monitor and checking your sugar again. If your sugar level is still below normal you should see a doctor. If your sugar level is actualy 45, after having something to eat(prefferably some fresh fruit) get yourself to the hospital NOW!!

with a reading of 45 you would feel shakey, so I wounder if you did it right. If you feel fine re read the instructions and try again. Regardless of what the meter says see your doctor.
