I think you have a point I mean his pride did get him more recognition but still he was one of the greatest if not the greates. You could put up a fight for Rocky Marciano but still Ali kind of more known. But his constant pride did gain him more fame and probably the title of "the greatest" he is the king of boxing now.
Thanks

When he turned pro he always talked about his wins and what round he would win in so that was the start. But he did not say he was the greatest until he beat Sonny Liston in 1964. He said: I just upset Sonny Liston, I just became champion of world, and I just turned 22 I must be the greatest!! And the greatest was born. Tada!

Ali was still undefeated when he called himself "The Greatest". He wasn't champion yet, but at that time he was terrorizing the heavyweight division, knocking out top contenders in the round he'd predicted.

He called himself the greatest.

He said:
"I am the greatest. Not only do I knock em out, I pick the round!"

Whether or not he took that as his own nickname, or the press took it, is up for debate.

He named himself the greatest. I'm sure he didn't think that after Smokin' Joe Frasier beat him or anyone else.
