I hope the entire recall will finally show people exactly how BAD commercially prepared pet foods are and encourage them to feed biologically appropriate pet foods. (That means raw meat and raw bones.) For info on feeding RAW, visit www.leerburg.com/feedingarawdiet.htm
NEVER FEED A PET COOKED OR SMOKED BONES!

Tainted corn gluten has been found in dog food in South Africa, but not in the USA yet.
It is suspected that this is INTENTIONAL to make the foods appear higher in protein than they actually are. It is being investigated.
There were suspicious stock sales immediately before recalls were released to the media. These are being investigated. It supports the theory that poison was intentionally added.
I recommend a dog food brand - ARKAT. Has formulas from crappy to excellent, good prices and they purchase ingredients in the USA. They are manufactured by their own facility - not contracted out to another company.
At other pet food factories, up to 1/4 of a vat might be a different formula of dog food. (Rather than dump extras, they leave it in the vat and add to it to make the next kind of food.) So you might buy a bag of Science Diet, but that bag might actually contain a different food!

im glad you mentioned about the "never feed your dog cooked or smoked bones". Some owners are incredibly ignorant and still think cooked food is ok as a regular part of an animals diet.
just a note: for ALL those foods on the recall list, the recall applies only to certain batches - not all food ever made. So before everyone starts panicking because they have one of the recalled foods in their cupboard, check out the batch number (package date code or UPC) and see if its the same as the one in your cupboard -

THANK YOU for posting this. I am sure there will be more to come. Wilbur-Ellis distributed the contaminated rice product to five major dog food producing plants and at least a few brands have been having their food tested to get official word that YES it contains melamine in the rice product before recalling. Natural Balance recalled first, now Royal Canin. I am sure this is not the END but I sure wish it was. I feed my dog's Nature's recipe and haven't had a problem, but I am still considering a homemade diet, partial raw because I just don't trust any dog food company at this point. Once the food is mass produced there is just too great a margin for error and too little regulation. The recalls used to be quieter but now consumers are wise and better informed. Not only that, but people are learning what goes into the mix and that regardless of how "premium" a dog food it, there is a chance that there are products that go into cheap foods, and are the same products that go into the expensive ones. Yes, the different foods can have their own formula and exclusions. The Nature's Recipe does not have wheat, corn or soy. But it does have rice. It does not have brown rice though, so it may not be affected. We shall see.

Yup, and the ingredient is now rice protein.. This is going to get worse before it gets better I believe.
Hopefully they will learn from this.. Not likely, but we can hope. Too many pets lost already to lack of care and control in these companies.
Natural Balance said it was recalling all its Venison and Brown Rice canned and bagged dog foods, its Venison and Brown Rice dog treats and its Venison and Green Pea dry cat food.

I think you read that wrong. Its the Natural Balance that has been recalled. Diamond produces the food, at this time no Diamond products have been recalled.
