This has got to be one of the best fighters ever made. Not to mention my most favorite aircraft on the planet. Now that they have been decommissioned, the only thing they have to look forward to is a degrading and disrespectful procedure I like to call being chopped up like roast chickens. This is something I would expect, oh, a piece of crud Cessna or something like that to go through. Yeah, there's a few exceptions. There's a handful that are in museums across the country that will escape this fate. And there's a handful that Iran has, but we can't even lay a hand on those because they don't belong to us anymore, and naturally, they, too, escape this fate. Personally, I'd like to see one be buried rather than being chopped up. I think it would be more respectful to both the aircraft and to those who have flown in these planes.

Being someone who loves these planes, I feel it is a great loss. And I'm sure it's no trip to Disneyland for those who have flown them.

Thanks for your thoughts, folks. It's only been a couple days and I have a few interesting answers already. I'm going to set this to run through the weekend and see what kind of response it gets.

The majority of the F-14's will probably be shipped to the AMARC facility at Davis Monthan AFB. Here they will be preserved for possible future use.

I would personally like to see some demilitarized (radar and weapons systems removed) and flown on the air-show circuit. I know of one circuit pilot (Dale Snodgrass, Capt, USN RET) who was perhaps the best F-14 pilot the Navy ever had and I would love to see him back at the controls.

I would recommend the top F-14 Pilot to take Tom Cruise on a real spin - let's see if he pukes with some negative G and inverted climbs!

I understand your sentimental, but they will probably of the way of the F-4. Can you say "target practice?"

******
What's up w/ the tumb down? I watched "Top Gun." I cried w/ Goose died (I was 5.)

But that is the natural progression. It'll start happening to the F-15 soon too, & it has the best combat record ever (zero combat loses). Furthermore, the 15 could probably serve for another 15-20. Can the F-14 say that?

I guess the BEST way to say goodbye... would be to convert some to target drones for the Superhornet to practice on.

I was an SH-60B crewman... and loved watching the Tomcat !!

I seriously suspect you to be an agent of Mahmoud "InaDinnerJacket" - That clown who calls himself the president of Iran - I understand he needs parts for his F-14 - They are all grounded -

I think they are going to be given to national guard units until the planes crash or outlive their airframe lifespan. Maybe they can be used as trainers because they can fly as fast as the JSF.
