It because of people using that ignorant term that you used. For one thing it's mis-spelled since the Latin word for fish is Piscis. The main problem is the mis-use of the -arain suffix (which denotes lifestyle and NOT diet) which dilutes the meaning of vegetarian in the minds of the general population. The correct term time honored term for a fish eater is listed below, please correct anyone that uses those other terms that appear to have been coined less than 30 years ago. Piscivore has been in use for well over 2500 years!
If anyone has a reference to that offensive term being used that pre-dates 1990 I'd love to see it! The earliest I've found it in print is from meat industry junk about vegheads. At this point my theory is that they started it as a mild smear of real vegetarians.

Probably not knowing the meaning of the word. The premise of language is to communicate, so it's a good idea to use the correct terminology. A vegetarian diet comprises, by definition, vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, and sometimes eggs or dairy products (if ovo or lacto vegetarian). NO animals of any kind!
A person who eats fish can be called pescetarian, pesco-vegetarian or piscavore. Any of these can be easily understood. Using inaccurate terminology just confuses the issue.

I've never understood why people think vegetarians eat fish. They must not realize that fish are living animals. They probably ask it because some people (who are non-vegetarians) eat fish but not other meat.

Guess I don't understand as I don't believe vegetarians eat fish and don't know of any others who think they do. A friend of mine is a vegetarian and never heard of anyone who though he would eat fish.

My girlfriend is a vegetarian and she eats fish. The whole idea behind words is being understood. No one would know what you were talking about if you said "My girlfriend is a pescatarian."
Fish don't get abused their whole life, so she doesn't feel so bad.

Many vegetarians just call themselves vegetarians and don't make the distinction, which is confusing to everyone.
Heck... I know some people call themselves vegetarians since they don't eat "red" meat, but only eat fish and chicken.

I hate when people say that.
If you are a vegetarian, you DO NOT eat meat, which includes fish.
If it is the dead flesh of an animal, it is meat. End of story.
