Hypoglycemia, also called low blood sugar, occurs when your blood glucose (blood sugar) level drops too low to provide enough energy for your body's activities. In adults or children older than 10 years, hypoglycemia is uncommon except as a side effect of diabetes treatment, but it can result from other medications or diseases, hormone or enzyme deficiencies, or tumors.

Hypo stands for low, glyc for glucose: sugar and aemia from haem: blood.
So hypoglycaemia is low sugar level in the blood than what is normal.
It can happen to anyone. Almost everyone must have had it when there is too much exertion or stress, or when we don't get to eat anything for very long.
Diabetics get it 'cause their blood sugar control mechanisms have a defect. They have high sugar levels from food and because of the fact that many other hormones, which Insulin fights against in healthy bodies, have the tendency to increase blood sugar. So when Insulin is absent or defective, they increase blood sugar. But on exertion, these diabetics are at a higher risk for having hypoglycaemia. Plus, they are on medications for lowering blood sugar, so these have their effects too.

Hypoglycemia unrelated to exogenous insulin therapy is an uncommon clinical syndrome characterized by low plasma glucose level, symptomatic sympathetic nervous system stimulation, and CNS dysfunction. Many drugs and disorders cause it. Diagnosis requires blood tests performed at the time of symptoms or during a 72-h fast. Treatment is provision of glucose combined with treatment of the underlying cause.
