The placement of Georg W. Bush and his odd vice-president Dick Cheney, in the White House. Their actions and policies are a complete and utter failures. We have lost sons and daughters to an elective war, bankcrupted our values and morals, closed our eyes to environmental problems and generally lost the confidence of the world. The American people speak and Bush and Cheney plug their ears and insist they are "right".

Make up was made to make women feel more beautiful.
Now most women just feel ugly without it.
Fad diets initially are meant to help people lose weight.
Most people who lose the weight will gain it all back plus extra pounds and feelings of failure. A lot of eating disorders start off from fad dieting.
Religion, has created far more violence then good. Religion has played a role in almost every war. Just think of how many people have been tortured, in-slaved, and/or killed because they didn't worship the "proper" god.
Charity, by sending food and clothing to 3rd world countries you are killing any possible economic growth. Domestic businesses cannot survive because they cannot compete with free stuff. Think of the few businesses that they do have, they are only able to produce agriculture, fish, and clothing. After the local business are pushed out the people become completely dependent on free goods.
I disagree with the abortion comment. The babies that are being aborted are obviously not going to be brought up in a woderful home. Its a known fact that people who had bad childhoods are more likely to become criminals. Abortions have greatly reduced the crime rate.
Abortions would most likely fall in a category opposite to this question, something bad that results in a greater positive.

I have to say unions. Unions were great in the beginning and crucial in getting fair treatment and conditions for workers but now unions absolutely abuse the system and ruin the economy. My uncle works for Ford doing what is basically unskilled labor and makes twenty something dollars an hour, and this is not the bad part, he comes over my house which is at least half an hour away from the plant, stays for about two hours and then goes back to work, all this while he is on the clock at work. Any other business and he would be fired instantly but thanks to the UAW there is basically nothing that can be done. This is why American goods are so expensive and why so many companies are going overseas. Unions have destroyed the steel industry and are destroying the automobile industry, and coming from the midwest they have completely ruined our economy.

Affirmative Action. it was intended to provide a much needed help to people that were EQUALLY OR MORE QUALIFIED than the majority. that has been lost. now it is used for filling quota. i have nothing against, actually in am all for it if it would go back to the original way. it is being used as a threat on many city jobs like the police and fire departments. i don't know about you all, but i would rather have the most qualified majority than an under qualified minority just because the numbers don't add up to what the PC police think.
just another thought. though it wasn't created by humans, i think the human brain is the worst. it allows us to do things that other creatures can't. they adapt and we don't. all other animals only fight when there is no other choice, we fight when ever and not just wars. in the long run we will destroy everything because we are too smart for our own good.

This is a really hard question as everything has advantages and disadvantages - a lot of things that people have mentioned so far have major advantages that they try to ignore.
The one thing that jumps to my mind right now is pest control gone wrong. Basically an animal (or a chemical pesticide) is introduced into a habitat to combat a pest but ends up causing even more havoc. There are a bunch of examples like the cane toad in Australia which was introduced in the 1930s to eat cane beetles . It turned out that they couldn't jump high enough to reach the cane beetles but they bred unbelievably fast. They are poisonous at all stages in their lives - any animal or fish that tries to eat them is dead. They are resistant to pesticides themselves. They've outcompeted and poisoned several species into extinction and now number in the 100's of millions. They are generally considered to be one of the worst ecological disasters.

I think affirmative action because even though it may have given some minorities jobs they deserved, it also gave some minorities job they didn't earn or deserve and in some instances it knocked very good workers out of a job. Also Welfare because of all the people who have taken advantage of it. I believe all things like welfare need to have an incentive to get off of it and improve yourself. I personally know people who were on welfare for years, worked every day, as they got raises, there welfare was reduced by the amount of there raise. It takes someone who is really motivated to work at a job when they could sit at home and get the same money.

Does any remember from history class the Volstead Act- not sure I spelled that right. It was Prohibition when alcohol was illegal. It is also referred to as the noble experiment. It put a huge strain on the legal system as police officers and the courts tried to track down bootleggers. It also created more criminal activity period- mafia, homicides,
Now alcohol can cause a lot of problems too. Drunk driving, violence, alcoholism,
I guess it was decided that the law did more harm then good because drinking is now legal again.

war.
war was made to solve problems, but all it really does is create more. war is a concept that doesnt make since: 2 countries fight each other and whichever blows up the other country first or kills the most of the other country's people wins and is now more powerful than the country that got blown up/had all its people killed. how, at all, does that solve any of the world's problems? all it does is turn everyone against each other. i think the world would be a much better place to live if all the countries united and just stopped fighting over stupid stuff like which country gets what land. thats my opinion, anyway.

I basically agree with JJ, but I can't understand how nuclear WEAPONS were created to solve problems. Weapons were created to threaten & kill. & now it's a matter of the whole world community dictating who can have them, & who cannot. But that's another issue. I cannot "logically" think of ANYTHING humans created that can't be, or hasn't been abused, and/or harmful to "some." Honestly. I wonder will anyone come up with something to enlighten me.
Edit: Perhaps I didn't understand the question. I can be very dense at times. In what way can I think more "deeply?"

Religion. Hands down. I am speaking of all religions. From time immemorial and everywhere. It was invented by society to provide a framework for individual spirituality and it has simply been abused to coerce, subjugate and embezzle those for whom it was intended to help and justify violence and tyranny. Count the wars..the war dead ..the terrorist toll .. the misery caused by fundementalism..the Popes Coffers... to prove my point.
Also Michael Jackson seemed like a good idea when he was 5 but I am not so sure now.......
