Yep, it's Amarican! It's seasoned ground beef formed into a loaf, either in a loaf pan or on a large shallow pan w/ sides... baked, then sliced and usually served w/ mashed potatoes on the side.
Mama's Cheesy Meatloaf
1 lb. ground chuck
1 egg, beaten
2 tbls. worcestershire sauce
1 cup ketchup
1/2 tsp. onion salt
3/4 stack buttery crackers, crushed
2 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese
Mix all ingredients, except cheese. Press meat out onto plastic wrap about 1/2 inch thick. Sprinkle cheese over meat evenly. Roll up the meatloaf, jelly roll style. Tuck in the ends, and secure with LOTS of toothpicks. Bake at 350 degrees for about 45 min.
Sauce:
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup mustard
1/2 cup brown sugar
Combine, and heat thoroughly. About 15 min. or 20 min. before meatloaf is done, pour on some of the sauce, and finish baking. Keep the rest to pour onto the meatloaf slices at the table.

My Sicilian mother made Italian meatloaf. but it MAY be an Italian American thing.
Similar to American meatloaf but with 1/3 Italian Sausage and 2/3 ground beef
then spread flat on waxed paper into a rectangle
Layered with Provolone cheese, mozzarella cheese and prosciutto.
lightly layer Italian Gravy (pasta sauce)
roll up the whole thing.. bake
swirls of cheese and prosciutto yummers

All of the answers below are mostly correct about meatloaf, but I take exception to the people who say it is not liked. I have served meatloaf to kids who tell me they don't like hamburger, but they gobble it down. It has wonderful flavor, and if you use a hamburger that has a little more fat in it, it will sit and bake in the fat and get crisp on the outside. We almost always serve it for dinner with mashed potatoes and gravy and scalloped corn. The next day you serve it cold...sliced in a sandwich...my favorite meal.

Hi, Yes it is very American. Take minced/ground beef and mix in tomato sauce(ketchup), some bread crumbs or you can use oats; add an egg, some salt/pepper and some chopped onion. Stir together and it will be patted together as you put it into a pan to bake...180 C or 375F for about 1 hour. You will see it browning. Some people sprinkle a little cheese on top...others put a little b-b-q sauce on top.
When it is done it will not be pink inside. Cut into squares and serve...good with mashed potatoes and veggies.
I can get you a more specific recipe on measurments in metric or American measurements.
For excellent low fat and healthy serves, use ground turkey or a very high grade of beef which is very low in fat.
Meatloaf can be put in containers or plastic and frozen for meals later.
It helps keep meal time easy to prepare. It is economical to serve to a large group also.
You can add a variety of herbs and garlic as well. At various times I add frozen peas just to get an extra veggie into the children!!!
Also, teach young boys and girls to mix this batter and you put it in the oven. They will enjoy a healthy meal and learn culinary skills as well. Plus, it is fun to work with children in the kitchen .

Meatloaf is hamburger mixed with eggs and bread crumbs. Seasonings are added and it is baked in a loaf. It's then sliced and served. It's "big" in America - usually served with mashed potatoes.
