Please ignore the guy above me. He thinks several diseases don't exist (like HIV/AIDS), or are not the cause of serious health problems like cervical cancer.
I really don't see how he can say anything about cervical cancer and HPV since he will never experience cervical cancer because he is a man. Over 10,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in the US a year. And, of those 10,000 women, 4,000 of them will die from it. I'd like the guy above me to tell the family members of these women who DIED from this disease, that HPV is not responsible for their cervical cancer. I bet the families would love that. Most scientific studies have found that HPV is responsible for virtually all cases of cervical cancer.
I am living, walking and talking proof that HPV can and DOES cause cervical cancer. I was personally diagnosed with HPV when I was 17 years old. That same year I was diagnosed with pre-cancerous cells, which eventually turned into cervical cancer! It was one of the most physically and emtionally painful times of my life! And, after all that I went through, I can actually say that I was one of the lucky ones! Even if a women does survive cervical cancer, most of them have to have a hysterectomy. Once a hysterectomy is done, those women will never be able to have children of their own EVER again.
The only "truth" to this guys rant about HPV is that in the absence of pap testing or treatment, about 1% of women with genital HPV infections will eventually go on to develop cervical cancer. That might seem like a really small percent, but you have to remember - MILLIONS of people have HPV. So, that 1% can make up tens of thousands of women!
There is also a new vaccine out for HPV called Gardasil. Gardasil protects a women from contracting 4 different kinds of HPV. Two of those kinds, types 16 and 18, are responsible for about 70% of cervical cancer cases. If HPV didn't cause cervical cancer, why on Earth would there be a vaccine for it?
For most people HPV is pretty harmless, but that doesn't mean you should just brush it off. HPV is responsible for several different kinds of warts and a few different cancers, including cervical cancer. It is extrememly important for women to get yearly pap smears, and more if they have ever had an abnormal pap smear. Pap smears are the best thing a women can get done to detect any abnormal changes of the cervix, which can lead to cervical cancer.
HPV can and DOES cause serious health problems, and it blows my mind that someone can come on here and tell people otherwise.
Take care of yourself and stay safe!

Not really. I was diagnosed with it when I was either 18 or 19. I'm 23 now. I have never had an out break or anything. The only reason I know I have it is because of a pap smear. My dr even told me that I probably will never have any sign of it because most hpv is very mild. The only thing I really have to worry about with it, is spreading it (of course) & getting regular pap smears for testing to make sure I don't get cervical cancer.

Actually, they have found that men who smoke (including weed) take a longer time for HPV to go into remission and have more outbreaks than men who do NOT stress their immune systems. Not to mention the research showing the permanent changes to DNA from weed. Just saying...

I think it's very bad. Some types can cause cancer and not only cervical cancer.
There are several others, for example: oral cancer, head & neck cancers http://jnci.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/96/13/975-b
also there certain types of HPV that have been linked to cancer of the anus and penis in men.
http://www.cdc.gov/std/hpv/STDFact-HPV-and-men.htm#symptoms
I think men should also be able to get the vaccination for HPV.
