Herpes is NOT inherited or passed down through a parents genes like colorblindness or curly hair.

Herpes can be passed to a baby during birth though, but this is EXTREMELY rare. I've read chances of this happening are less than 1%. If the mother is currently having an outbreak, she can pass the virus to the baby as it is being born. This happens as the baby is coming through the birth canal during delivery. As the baby is coming through the birth canal is can rub up against the herpes sores, causing it to contract the virus. If the mother is having an outbreak of genital herpes the doctor will usually suggest a C-section delivery to avoid the baby contracting it. If the mother is NOT having an outbreak, then a normal vaginal delivery is perfectly fine!

If your daughter contracted the virus at 21, then SHE contracted it, most likely from some sort of sexual contact. I HIGHLY doubt she got it from you. Even if she has never had sex, she can still get the virus. Genital herpes can be spread by DIRECT skin to skin contact with an infected area. So, even if her and a guy were just rubbing genital areas together (like "dry humping") and he has the virus, she could have got it from him.

I contracted genital herpes when I was 17 years old from sex. My parents didn't want to believe that their little "baby" could get a virus like that, but it happens ALL the time. Genital herpes is SO common. It's estimated about 1 in 4 women have it!

Diseases can only be transmitted through genes if they are genetic diseases.

Herpes is not a genetic disease, but a sexually transmitted disease, as you said in your question.

The main possible ways for your child to contract herpes are...

1. as an infant when being delivered, infected by the mother. (Unfortunate, but some cases are documented.)

2. having sex with an infected partner.

you can't develop herpes out of thin air. Something must have happened.

My best friend has had genital herpes for about eight months now, and it's been really rough. She's had about 7 outbreaks. Everywhere I read it says it stops flaring up so much after time, but its not getting less frequent for her. She's been on Antiviral meds the whole time, too. She also has type 1 diabetes which she has had her whole life, which really weakens her immune system. Will it ever get better?

But after a friend share this video everything has changed.

Herpes is not a genetic condition, thus it cannot be "passed down". What can happen is that there is a possibility that if the baby is delivered vaginally while the mother is having an outbreak, it can be passed on.

Sometimes doctors opt to preform c-sections instead, but when a mother isn't having an outbreak, the chances of transmission are pretty low.

If she did not previously have the disease before, then it pretty much says she got infected by a sexual partner.

Not transmitted through genes but through exposure during pregnancy and birth.

no it can not be spread through parents genes. your daughter is 21, about to get married and probably sexually active. I'm betting that's how she got it.

Not through genes.

Babies can get it from their mother's if at the time of delivery the mother has an outbreak.
