Castration. Why not? Aren't catholic priests not allowed to get married anyways?

Agree or disagree? Why?

Of course I havent thought this out very well, I was just asking what you guys thought.

Castration doesnt seem so bad. People mutilate themselves everyday in all walks of life. There has to be consequences though for the priests who DO touch little boys inappropriately and of a sexual nature. Not just getting suspended. I'm not Catholic but aren't priests bound to a code of ethics or morality that does not permit any sort of sexual misconduct?

Michael Jackson should be castrated, just for the hell of it.

Pastor Billy says: so what do you have planned for all the Protestant Pastors who together have a higher rate of molestation cases not sure if their wives would agree to castration. This is a serious reply to your question fact is the rates of abuse among Protestants is actually higher and of course the rate of abuse amongst the general populus is higher even more.

I think your solution isn't a solution or you haven't been exposed to more raw data on the topic to really understand the demographics. For example I would bet you aren't even aware that out of the total number of child abuse cases in America today the majority involve abuse by women and not men. Don't see any women priests in the Catholic Church do you?

see article for government source below:

http://www.catholicleague.org/research/abuse_in_social_context.htm

The National Child Abuse and Neglect Data Systems was developed by the Children’s Bureau of the U.S. Department of Human Services in partnership with the States to collect annual statistics on child maltreatment from State child protective services agencies. For the year 2001, it was found that approximately 903,000 children were victims of child maltreatment, 10 percent of whom (or 90,000) were sexually abused. It also found that 59 percent of the perpetrators of child abuse or neglect were women and 41 percent were men.[i]

Dear Mz Chiquita,

i think a better solution might be to have a better screening process and also to allow priests to get married. (I am a Christian) and no where in the Bible does it teach that pastors (the Catholic equivalent being a priest) should not get married. It is a man-made rule which makes one seem more devout...

Personally however i think anyone who would molest a child (it's a problem beyond whether they are married or not).

i think the question should be more addressed whether people who are child molesters should be castrated or not. Personally i think not-- they should be sent to jail and they should have to go through counseling and rehabilitation and most certainly (if they are in the clergy) should never be allowed back there again.

But it seems to be a decision that is based on society. I'm sure a mother who had her child molested might feel a bit different. i guess this is why as a society we make rules and in America we have the liberty to vote on these things.

Hope that helps. Kindly,

Nickster

Disagree. Castration is a form of mutilation, and that is against the moral law. You cannot justify one immorality by pointing to another. To do so only proves Christian teachings on how evil begets evil.

Besides, merely castrating someone does not constitute a "fix". The deviant priest will still experience his disordered sexual urges, and still feel compelled to relieve himself of said urges whether he has been castrated or not.

I don't think you've thought the issue through very well.

If you're going to apply castration to priests, why stop there? Pedophilia is a crime that happens in every walk of life, not just with priests (protestants, Jews, Muslims, atheists, etc.).

I do not think this is a good idea. There is a scripture that states that if someone's eye causes them to sin, they should pluck it out; if their hand causes them to sin, they should cut it off. I read that if we took this literally, none of us would have eyes or hands because we sin constantly. The point is that we must disconnect/cut ourselves off from sin. It is only through a trust in Jesus, repentance and penance to we conquer sin. Mutilation is not the answer.

God bless.

Disagree. Castration is against Catholic teaching.

Catholic priests still jack off... you cant cut it off and expect the seminary to get new recruits. What the church needs to do is quit obstructing the prosecutions of pedophile priests, quit pretending it is not a problem, and force those individuals out.

... the church knows it's had a problem for decades, but was more interested in keeping the donations rolling in than they were about their congregation.

Now a great portion of their donations are going to legal expenses incurred by those priest, while the church is funding their retirements and sending them to live out their days in Europe.

I suppose the "" if thine eye offend they pluck it out" thing could be taken to that extreme but we are commanded to treat the body as a holy temple and not mutilate it. I would , however agree that it could be useful for the priests who DO molest.

Actually I don't think it will have any effect. Molesters are drawn to positions that give them access to children and do not stop molesting just because they are allowed to have sex. Its a sick thing, but its not driven by that kind of carnal need. I really think priests should be allowed to marry, but its not going to stop children from being abused by sick men with power over them. sad world.

Castrating sex offenders doesn't work, it doesn't get rid of the urges like you think it would...I have a better idea - Use them for medical testing and save a few cute furry animals in the process...

The easier solution would be to just let priests be normal men and get married. Celibacy was an invention of the 15th Century church in order to prevent priests from marrying and bequeathing church lands to sons who might not want to be priests. It had nothing to do with anything Jesus did, it was just a way for the church to hold onto its loot.
