I'm a vegetarian, and people often make stupid remarks... however, this occurs the most.
"Oh, I feel SO bad for you!!!! How can you not eat meat?!?!?"
Don't feel bad for me, it's my choice; no one is forcing me not to eat meat. They sympathize for me, when, frankly, I'm so much happier with the vegetarian lifestyle I pursue, that they should respect my choice instead of bashing. Also, there are SO many other food options out there besides meat products- I haven't eaten meat in four years, and I rarely have trouble ordering in a restaurant or finding myself something to eat.
I've also had the "one person isn't going to make a difference remark". Well, I'm an optimistic person, and I know I'm not going to save the world, but I at least know I am making a positive difference, however slight it may be, and that I am contributing to the welfare of the animals in this country.
Also, I've had people tell me "I'm a vegetarian too! But I sometimes eat chicken and I usually don't eat beef, except I did last night but thats because thats all my family was preparing for dinner" That is frustrating to me as a true vegetarian because that makes me believe that people dont understand the true meaning and/or significance of vegetarianism in this country and the self-control, diet variation, and patience it takes to pursue a vegetarian diet.

I know this is probably a pretty standard question and is not exactly silly, necessarily, but it is the one question that always leaves me completely dumbfounded. Every time I am asked this question, it is difficult for me to answer, simply because of the fact that I am so astounded by how completely idiotic it is that my jaw has dropped. So what is this winning pearl of a ridiculous inquiry??
"So what can/do you eat??"
This question is always asked in a seemingly sincere fashion, as though the person who poses it really cannot conceive of a single food item that does not come from an animal. Mind you, my entire family is omnivorous, and my husband and I are viewed as absolute freaks of nature. I understand (though I find it sad and disgusting) the mentality that dictates that a meal is not complete without at least a small portion of meat. My brother has told me outright that he would not even entertain the idea of eating a meal absent of meat.
However, that varies slightly from the overall astonishment of these nitwits that ask the "so what do you eat?" question. Interestingly enough, I have found that if I remain silent for a moment after the question is asked, it is almost invariably followed up by "What, do you just eat like pasta all the time or something?" Surprise, surprise, these brainiacs are shocked when I inform them that I actualy eat very little pasta.
Even though I am trying to make light of this situation, it really does make me sad that this is the level of intellect and thought that my vegetarianism is most often met by. Maybe I need to relocate to a more veggie friendly community.

Okay I just want to vouche for people like me.
I've asked the fish question. Because I know vegitarians who don't eat Red meat or "any meat" but do eat fish.
and I've asked the smart assed animal cracker question because everyone I ask has to decide if I'm kidding or not and it's funny.
I've never met a militant veggitarian nor a militant "Omnivore" as you say so I don't mind either way but I just want to point a few fun facts since this will be so far behind in the posts no one will read it :)
First of all, (esp aladdin sane) Cows go through ALOT of pain if they aren't milked after the babies are weaned. it's like a charlie horse you cant get rid of for about 2 weeks. Anyone who has spent their life in a state where cows out number people 3:1 (I beleive is the recent stat) knows that, anyone who's heard the cows crying when they need to be milked knows that. So I dont see a problem with the milk question.
nor the bread question, after all some breads are made with lard and or milk.
Protiene comes largely from meat, thus the protene question, and yea for some it's a problem, my mom started losing her hair before she started taking vitamins.
Many animals die when the crops are planted/harvested, In states where there are hawks and the type, they follow the plows (so did a 3 legged coyote! I don't know how it lived between seasons!)
and a fun oddity "they" who I dont remember. gave a tomato plant a polygraph, 2 plants alone in a sunny room taken care of, one day they sent a guy in and he destroyed it not just clipped it smashed it ripped it to peices and stomped on it. THe other plant had a reaction, and the next time he came in the room again, it registered another. Last I heard was 4 or 5 years ago on something like Paul harvey, cute huh? Can't say if it's true but I remember it.
Any way. Last point. Omnivore is a classification of an animal. Not a chosen life style. A man can change everything about himself to be a woman, but his DNA says he's a man. Even if he makes an excellent woman. Humans are classified as omnivores, vegitarian is a life style. Small difference but it's there.

I eat meat, but I wanted to share the only thing that I say to my friend and co-worker about her being a vegetarian - "It's OK to eat fish cause they don't have any feelings"
Its just a joke so don't get all hot and bothered by it. I do respect all of you who choose not to eat meat, I can't say that I understand it but respect it yes. I do have to say one thing - as you all know you are the minority, I do not think that you should expect the people around you to change their behavior to suit your choices. I mean this in the nicest way possible, but if you are going to a Friends house for dinner ask if they are going to have a vegetarian dish for you, if not bring one. When I diet I do not EXPECT my hosts to prepare a dish that follows my diet plan, I eat before I go or I bring a dish that I can eat and enough to share and I always tell my host that I am bringing something and why as to not insult them. I hear too much complaining that the one person in the group who is a vegetarian is not being taken into consideration when I don't think it is right to expect that. I would just like you to take that into consideration.

Dear Natalia here's one;
Q:Why did the rabbit enter the meat shop?
A:Because the door was open"
Vegetarians are that way for their own reasons. No body is forced to explain himself, for everybody is entitled to the life he chooses.
Not all vegetarians "Deprive" themselves from meat to save the"animal kingdom", others have metabolic problems which force them to be that way.
With respect to carnivores who ask that, they know that they aren't in the jungle & they can't eat the helpless, so they make such stupid remarks in return. If you believe in something, then you are making a difference, & it is worth the effort, even if you are alone at it.
Still, better carnivore than cannibal.Bdw i am a cannibal(lol) carnivore.

I am not a vegetarian, but I think that is so awesome that you do that. I tried a couple of times but I keep going back to eating meat because I am allergic to alot of green vegetables... and after awhile, all the fruits and onions and carrots got on my nerves because I like salty stuff alot. But i wish I could do that.... Anyway, while I was a vegetarian a 16 year old asked me why I was eating the earths lungs? it was stupid because even though plants supply oxygen it is mainly trees that do. I told him that and he said yeah but broccoli is a little tree... i was eating a potatoe... i hate broccoli... anyway if you can do that more power to you !!!!

The Bible says we are given meat to eat for strenght.
but there is also a passage about not eating meat when with your friends if it bothers your friends.
The early vegans died from a lack of vitamin b 12. Dont take my word for it, its on the web, I did a class paper on too.
i have certificate in nutrition.
I am a chef and I had to learn all types of cooking and there are various reasons why a person choses not to eat meat and Ive never bugged anyone to eat meat. But I have been told by a group of vegans that I could not sit with them because I ate meat and the funny thing is that I had cooked what they were eating.
I have seen these same vegans make children cry because they say eating meat is murder and they are eating a baby cow. etc.
So we meat eaters arent the only insensitive ones on this planet.

Well, you may eat as an herbivore, but physiologically, you are designed as an omnivore. However, if you are able to get your Essentials through an animal-free diet, I say more power to you.
As far as stupid questions from non-Vegetarians, they don't like what they don't really understand, and most are set in their ways. I don't really see why they would bring Jesus into this, though. I doubt if he cares what you eat, as long as you take care of your body. He drank wine with just about every meal, but you don't see us doing that..

First of all, people wrote the bible. Jesus didn't write it. I suspect those people were meat eaters, so I'm sure they didn't mind including it in the book. So, vegetarians don't think they're better than Jesus and the bible never forced anyone to eat meat.
And one vegetarian can make a difference because they can even influence others. I don't go pushing my values on others but once people realize that vegetarians do exist and live healthy lives, then they will want to learn more about it. They just need some support from others to get started. Vegetarians and vegans can most definitely slow the business of the meat industry, even though we are outnumbered, every little bit counts.
Here are some dumb questions I've heard:
*So, do you eat fish?
*Why don't you eat seafood? They are just like plants.
*Can you eat bread?
*Do you eat scallions?
*Why don't you eat animal broth or lard? It's not like it's an actual animal.
*If you don't eat animals, how will you get any blood?
*If god doesn't want us eating animals, then why did he make them taste so good?
And here's the best one:
*Dude, I totally believe in reincarnation man. I was probably like an animal in my past life yo. Hey, someone pass the ribs!
Hey Chef Mark, I followed that statement with "I don't push my values on others" I was pointing out that a lot of people don't become vegetarians because they think it's impossible. Why don't meat eaters stop bashing vegetarians? We don't go to your section and tell you to choke on a hamburger.

uhh this is a hard one, there are so many.
Well I have to include, "Aren't you sick cause you are not getting enough protein?"
but the, "do vegans girls give oral?" is always a classic.
And, "Why don't you eat fish? Fish is Vegetarian" is funny.
I can't think of the stupidest one in particular, but I hate the,
" Why don't you drink milk, It doesn't hurt the cows to milk them, It Actually helps them." I hate that one, they say that like they actually know what they are talking about, ha ha.
Or I hate, "Why don't you wear leather, You aren't eating it."
And another is, "Think of all the plants you are killing"
Oh and I forgot, "Do Vegetarians eat animal crackers?"... but the newest question posted just reminded me.
**
Hey Mr. Knowitall...
->Are you really that selfish and small-minded to think that animals were put here for us?... They were not put here for themselves? oh no,[sarcasm] because anything that is on the earth was put here for us and only us, yeah... right. Just because an animal is here does not mean that it has to be here either to be used as food or a pet.
-> And yes, it is obvious that you do not know about "us people", or life in general. If you did, you would know that it does not "defy logic" to be a vegetarian/vegan. We are probably healthier than you, and we will probably live longer. How is that illogical?
-> You are obviously the one that needs attention, coming in here and messing with us.
-> And lastly, if you knew what you were talking about, then you would know that vegetarians don't go around saying," We don't eat living things"... anyone that made it past 1st grade knows that plants are living things. And lettuce DOES NOT have feelings, or a nerves, or a central nervous system, .........or a brain- which apearantly niether do you.
Why don't you go bother someone else.
