Firstly I want to apaologise for such an abrupt statement.Having just read 'Night' and watching 'Life is beautiful' I really feel the need to comment, I truly dont want to offend anyone, I am not religious nor politically minded, but in my humble (ill educated, and objective) opinion, I just want to express my absolute deepest remorse at mankind, the unimaginable happened, and as I can only read the words, even as I type, , words cant explain..but I suppose what I am trying to say, is that I cant comprehend how such a dark, dark, black behaviour occured, in my lifetime, and as a mere reader, or student, I cant ever comprehend the horrors of human nature and to this day almost seem to have somehow been ignored, by that, I mean, in my lifetime, how could the nazi soilders been forgiven?, how could Germaby be forgiven (for turning a blind eye?) and how could the jewish community still have faith?? Im astounded by the accounts of courage I have read, and feel humbled at my mere existence

Thank you for your post. It was very moving.

For people who feel on the outside of things, to know that others can identify with them, and feel the pain they have gone through, must surely give them faith in Humanity again.

Thank you, again, for being so open here.

I read the same book years ago. I feel the same remorse. How could we still let such intolerance (e.g. toward Muslims) and such genocide (e.g. in Sudan) go on in today's world if we truly felt sorry? However, most Germans did not have full knowledge of what was happening to Jews during the Holocaust. Many did, but many others did not. I don't think that we can blame the Germans as a people. We should also blame the Western governments, including our beloved American government, that denied entry to Jews trying to escape from Germany.

It's hard to imagine human beings doing that to other humans. It's hard to believe that we have that much evil in us. The thing is, we have to remember, or it will happen again. Maybe not by the Germans, or not to the Jews and gypsies, but if we ignore evil, we allow it to spread. We're basically doing the same thing right now in Africa. The mujadeen are trudging thru, killing all in their path, wiping out entire villages, but the news media kepts pretty silent about it. Read about Darfur, the atrocities going on there. We're doing basically nothing there either, except ignoring it. The US would not never gotten involved in WWII if not for Pearl Harbor, and as it was, it took us way too long to intervene. There's no money in Africa and India, so we keep our distance and pretend it isn't happening, just like we did about the nazi's until we were forced to open our eyes. Evil is alive and well in this world, and we who sit and do nothing are just as guilty as the ones killing.

And not only Jews were put into these camps but also gypsies, war prisoners, Jehovah's Witnesses, and others.

Sadly, some people doubt the holocaust ever happened.

I visited Auschwitz last summer. The piles and piles of children's shoes that were on display was heartbreaking.

Although many people are horrified at what happened during this time, several people display the same attitude as the Nazi party did. For example, a lot of people even on Yahoo! Answers persecute by their mouth people of other faiths. I can't count how many times people have made fun of Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, atheists, and others. Although this is not as serious as the Holocaust was, it is still the same principle. Why make trouble for people who do not share your ideas? People who hate other people simply because they are different are no better than the Nazis.

I agree, I am reading Auchsvitz (spelling) The final Solution at the moment, what some of the people endeared on a day to day basis and their sheer will to survive quite amazes me, yet we still live with atrocities such as the mass executions in this day and age - take rhwanda (again spelling) for instance. Have we learned nothing!!

It happened to gay people, gypsies, alcoholics. the mentally disturbed and Jews. It happened then and it happened again and again, Pol Pot, Rwander are just a few.

If something can happen it will happen! If it's happened before then it will happen again. This is why we must never forget and always keep watch.

It got to you, right! Wish it would get thruough to everyone. Every time I read about it (and I have read many. many accounts of the Holocaust) there are new horrors. The one that got to me recently was the account of a Jewish guy in one of the numerous ghetto's who was walking on the street and there was a couple in front of him with a two young children. As they walked along an SS soldier came up and said to one of the little girls "would you like s sweetie?" She answered shyly "yes please" and the SS man said "open your mouth then". When she did, he pulled out his revolver and shot her through the mouth! It shook me up, and I dropped the book I was reading, and that picture has haunted me since, specially when I look at my daughter with her own little daughter, my grandchild!

What sickens me most is that despite people remembering the Holocaust we have all stood by while it has happened again and again. Right now we are all standing by whilst genocide is happening in Darfur. Don't waste your tears on something that happened 60 years ago - its happening now and still we do nothing.

and how do you feel about the Holocaust of Nagasaki and Hiroshima which children born today are still suffering as a result of genetic mutations, what about the experiments on American GI's to see what would happen if they radiated their testicles; or many years later the experiment with American GI's to see if LSD could be used for mind control, or the release of legionaries disease over a civilian American town population by the American army to see how it would disperse, it did and people died. Your government has owned up to these things, but Iraq and Guantanamo Bay still happens present day. Isn't it awful what governments do and even worse when it's your own. The Holocaust was terrible but have a close loook at your own neighbourhood. The German people didn't know about the death camps for most of the war and were reassured by their government that what was done was justifiable and moral. I gather as an American presumming you are, you wont know what the hell I'm talking about! Just like the German people circa 1940',
