Here is an article for the dosage of garlic as per research :
Immune cells come to the scene and gobble up the oxidized cholesterol, enlarge and turn into what are called foam cells. They then trigger the tiny muscle cells along the arteries to change form. These smooth muscle cells lose their ability to contract, become rigid and then multiply. Further, they begin to gorge on the cholesterol as well. A huge plaque or scar (called a fatty streak) develops along the artery where the initial damage occurred. (The result is somewhat like a snag in the carpet and so many layers of tape are put on it to keep people from tripping that they being to trip on the tape itself.) Several compounds in Aged Garlic Extract (S-allyl cysteine, allixin, alliin and S-allyl mercaptocysteine) were found to prevent copper induced oxidation of LDL. Allixin was found to be as effective as a common antioxidant used in foods, BHT, but was also highly toxic. S-allyl cysteine, on the other hand was effective, at higher doses, but was nontoxic. Dr. Steiner indicated that it took much longer for copper to oxidize the LDL cholesterol of his subjects taking Aged Garlic Extract (3.6 g/day for 2 weeks) than those not taking the garlic.
Dr. Lau's group at Loma Linda University, indicated that both Aged Garlic Extract and SAC inhibited not only the oxidation of LDL but also the damage that Ox-LDL causes to endothelial cells (cells which line arteries and maintain healthy arterial conditions). Ox-LDL was found to deplete cells of intracellular glutathione (an enzyme necessary for detoxification), to oxidize membranes (lipid peroxidation) and to cause cell death. Aged Garlic Extract and SAC prevented such damage. Ox-LDL also causes an increase in the amount of peroxide (free radical) released from both endothelial cells and macrophages (immune cells). Aged Garlic Extract and SAC inhibited this release of free radicals.
