I think I am developing diabetes. I'm 33, overweight, and it runs in my family. Lately I have been having tingling in my feet and I know I have blood-sugar induced mood swings. I'm really scared, and I would like some words of advice from people who have been through this. I need to call my doc, I'm just looking for a good way to broach the subject. Do I call and make an appointment and just tell them I think I am diabetic? Any real encouragemant would be great.

Yes, absolutely call your doctor. As for what to say, I would let him know that you believe you may have a problem with your blood sugar - but support it with symptoms rather then just saying 'i think i'm diabetic'.... My reasoning for this is that many doctors tend to look at patients as hypochondriacs when they come in and state a diagnosis. Tell your doctor exactly what is happening, let him draw the conclusions and diagnosis.

It may be helpful to record what you eat for a week, as well as how you feel before and after eating. Also record any symptoms you may have when you skip eating, or when you first wake up.... Anything from dizziness, sweating, extreme thirst, increase in urination, etc, can help your doctor identify the cause.

Your doctor may send you for a glucose tolerance test, similar to what they administer to pregnant women, which involves drinking a thick sugar solution and having a few blood draws, or he may provide you with a blood sugar monitor to use for a few days and ask you to track fasting blood sugars and blood sugars after eating for a few days. Chances are, the first thing they will suggest if it is a positive diagnosis will be an attempt to control it through diet and exercise. If that doesn't work, they may suggest insulin therapy, and you should be able to get a trained nurse to help you learn the ropes.

Diabetes is a completely manageable diagnosis. It may not be fun, but when carefully controlled, the symptoms and side effects can be minimized. Good luck.

Never worry about asking or telling your Dr. anything. He's a professional who is there for you!! Most likely he's not going to hear anything from you that he hasn't heard before.

So, call and make the appt. When the receptionist asks the nature of the appt you can just say you haven't been feeling well and you're worried about the onset of Diabetes 2 and you would like to see the Dr. regarding it.

When you go in they will take a sugar level right there in the office. It will tell the Dr. if you're your sugar is too high. If it is
he might advise you to loose weight. (That is always involved with diabetes 2- no need for insulin diabetes). He might tell you to by a blood glucose (sugar) monitor. You can get one for $10.00. You take it several times during the day and you compare your readings with what are acceptable limits.
He also might put you on a medication that reduces sugar levels in your body.

This is a huge problem within the US and even though you are on the young side for onset you are smart to check it out.
I was diagnosed with it about 5 years ago. That is the way my Dr. handled it and so far I haven't had any problems.

Did you know that low blood sugar causes mood swings to.So, in your case who knows what is causing it.
Be prepared though for a change in your diet. You should learn about high sugar foods and how it effects your system
-not just weight. You'll be healthier and happier if you do.
He'll give you literature to read. He might even send you to a nutritionist. Give him a chance to help you. Make the appt

I am borderline diabetic also. I'm only 22. I'm about 40 pounds overweight. My mom, an RN told me that loosing weight would help if I only had type 2 diabetes. Type 2 is mostly by weight, the pancrease not being able to produce enough insulin for the entire body, weight loss and healthy diet usually fixes this.

Type 1 diabetes on the other hand is genetic. Both of which run in my family so i basically screwed either way....so i stay away from enriched breads, sugars and other carbs...because carbs turn into sugar when digested. I would still go to the doctor...which reminds me i also need to go.

Don't put it off either, my dad is diabetic and decided he wasnting going to take insulin anymore....now he cant walk and is blind in one eye....bet he won't get that cocky again.

Calm down you may or may not be having sugar related problems. Just go into your doctor and ask for a basic physical. This should include blood work. A glucose level will be included in this basic blood work. It will show if your sugar is elevated or not.

Does your doctor know you have family history of diabetes? I know personally how difficult it is to loose weight but do try to get into a good diet and exercise program to regain control of your weight.

Do you feel unhunry all the time even though you have just eaten? Low insulin levels will prevent nutrients from being utilized by your cells causing you to still unsatisfied and hungry.

Good Luck

Go to your doctor and ask him to do a blood sugar test on you.Don't let it go too long like i did and now my feet are numb.Sometimes diabetes can be controlled by diet, sometimes pills and of course sometimes it has to be insulin
Nothing to be scared of,your doctor is there to help you.It may not even be diabetes but you need to get checked
good luck and i hope you stay well

DAWG nothing was mentioned about being over weight running in the family, diabetes run in the family, learn to read and don't be so nasty, this person doesn't need your crappy opinions! grow up

Sure, just go ahead and call the doctor. Its nothing to be nervous about...its a really common condition nowadays, and it looks like you have a family history.
Your symptoms might be something else though, so dont stress too much..The best you can do is go and get it checked out. If the doctor cant diagnose it, he'll certainly be able to refer you to a specialist.

The quicker you address it the better. So, yes, call and tell them you think you are showing symptoms and get tested. With your current situation and family history, the doc will understand.

I've got family history and have been militantly taking care of myself to prevent it from happening to me, but as I think I show symptoms with age, I still have them check blood sugar during my regular check ups just to make sure. (They normally don't test for this unless you ask).

Yes honey, you do need to call your doctor and tell them to check you for this asap. My dad had diabeties it wasn't well taken care of and he lost his leg from poor circulation, ect. He got gangreen in his blood stream his kidneys shut down and he went into a coma he passed 7 days later. I am your age and I go often to be checked and I'd advise anyone to do the same. I don't want anyone to go through what my dad did please go get checked. I wish you the best and may God be with you you are in my prayers!!
