It is more common than one would think...but just because it is common doesn't mean it is normal.

Low salt will definately help matters but he needs a work-up from his primary care provider or a cardiologist to determine WHY he has high bloodpressure at such a young age. Especially because he is healthy.

My husband has had high bloodpressure since he was 14. He was a very active athelete in highschool but still had very high bloodpressure and no one knew why. There are conditions such as hyperaldosteronism and renal artery problems that can cause hypertension at a young age and he had a cat scan to rule them out. Also, he needed an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) to make sure that he didn't have LVH (Thickening of the heart muscle due to working hard from the high bloodpressure).

He probably should see a cardiologist...it doesn't mean that he *has* to start meds right now. He should find out some options and have some tests done because long term high bloodpressure is NOT good for the body.

You're not dying in 10 years. You could be run over by a bus tomorrow and be dead nonetheless, but that is not my point. First of all you have to determine why you are having high blood pressure. Hypertension is like a fever, it could merely be a symptom of something else. You could have high cholesterol or an overactive kidney or adrenal glands. You have to have further tests like blood work up (CBC, LDL, HDL, Triglycerides, etc.). Ask your doctor about it. Hypertension could also be caused by stress. If your hypertension is a symptom of another disease, you have to get that disease treated in order to control your blood pressure. For example, if it's caused by high cholesterol level, you can go on a diet or take anti-lipidemic medication. If your hypertension is caused by stress -- you can avoid stress. In any case there is medication to control your blood pressure. However, you have to get this problem resolved because prolonged hypertension will enlarge your heart and damage your arteries. That will cause you more problems 20 years down the line.

3 years ago, I was diagnosed - hypertension with a reading of 160/100. I used to feel dizzy a lot, my legs had awful cramps, and levels were very low in my potassium, causing my fingers and toes to always cramp together. One day I started to feel really faint while I was driving with my daughter in the back seat and I passed out, hitting 3 cars and ending up in a ditch. That moment,I knew I had to do something because my meds weren't working. I heard about this diet from a friend and thought I'd give it a shot. The results have been remarkable. In just 21 days, I honestly can't remember feeling this good, my blood pressure went from 175/110 to 125/70.

Ma'am I think the BP you have mentioned is 135/140/90? If he has reduced from 140/100 to the above level, he is doing fine. Since it runs in the family you will have have to his Lipid profile checked and there is no harm in consulting a doctor so that he can lead a quality life. There is no age limit for having hypertension.

Low salt will help if he has a type of blood pressure which is sensitive to salt, otherwise no it won't.
This sounds like familial hbp and it may be necessary to use medication to control it.
Normal bp used to be 120/80 but they changed the rules so that you are now supposed to be lower, all this seems to do is make it easier for insurance companies to charge more for insurance since nearly no adult is lower than that, so most doctors aren't rushing to scare people with 120/80.
