The very first case was found in a man in Africa in 1939. The second was in a missouri teenager in 1969 and the third was in a norwegian sailor in 1976. His entire immediate family died. This is what the scientific community knows, so whether it was around before is unknown. But we have been fighting HIV since 1981, so about 26 years now.
