there are generally four reasons why people become vegetarians -

1. they think killing animals for food is wrong

2. it is against their religion to eat meat

3. they are the children of vegetarians or religious people who dont eat meat, therefore dont eat meat either because of bias already existant within their social setting.

4. they dont like, or cant stomach meat very well. My brother is one of these - he doesnt have anything against eating meat, just a great deal of it makes him sick.

Well, I think that for some it is for religious reasons (such as Seventh Day Adventist followers), some it is because they don't tolerate animal protein well, some for health, and some because they have an aversion to killing animals to eat.

Personally, I would be very happy to be vegetarian, however my husband is not in agreeance and we now live in a community where everyone else eats meat. If another family came to live here who were vegetarian, then I would sure be happy to join with them!

most people are neglecting to mention a major reason why alot of people (including me) are vegetarian

health

With the way meat is raised/processed, there is SOOO much disease in today's meat. Many people see it as almost dangerous to eat meat.

I am a Seventh-Day adventist, and we are NOT vegetarian for religious reasons. Not directly anyway. The way it works is this: We DO believe that God requires us to take care of our bodies and do what's healthy. As I said, with today's meat industry practices, we see eating meat as unhealthy. THAT is why we believe God would like us to be vegetarians. However, we do NOT believe he "requires" it. Neither does the CHurch. Not all 7th day Adventists are vegetarian, that's for sure. It's just highly recommended.

People shouldn't make statements about other groups/religions/races, when they don't know what they're really talking about.

Besides, scientiic evidence is showing that a diet high in meat leads to all kinds of cancers. The human body DOES need protien, but not nearly as much as most Americans consume.

I became vegan because I suddenly began to hate the taste of meat and all meat by-products. The fact that it saves animal lives makes me feel better too though.

I am what I call a 'part time vegetarian' - most of the time I do without meat but now and then a little broth enhances my vegetable dishes, a chicken soup does not hurt either, and a good old gulash or other stew is simply delicious (though I tend to fish out the veggies rather than the meat...). So for me, if I had to choose one day to become a vegetarian, it is actually the taste rather than the thinking of the killing... it is a natural thing, animals kill for food, but I'd make certainly a bad hunter! Plus there are so many veggies around...! But I'd never be a total vegetarian, I always need some fish, and eggs plus some milk products, my body would not appreciate if I'd deprive it of those sources in my habitual diet!

my daughters friend doesn't eat meat for the simple fact that she believes killing animals is wrong! But she will eat fish, go figure. Humans have been eating meat for a very long time, and I for one don't intend to stop. I do love animals though.

I never liked the taste, because it reminded me of what it is, a piece of a dead animal.

nope meat is very tasty and necessary as protein to keep you healthy. Killing is a lot awful but a necessary business..I worked in bacon packaging and our change rooms were next to the pig yards. They used to scream a lot but this was at each other not for any other reason so I was told or I would have given up on meat or at least tried to..
