About 85% of them are viral. The rest are bacterial, nearly all of these are due to streptococcus.
The viral ones don't respond to antibiotics. All the Streptococcal ones are sensitive to Penicillin V (Erythromycin if you are allergic). No broad spectrum antibiotics like amoxicillin or co-amoxiclav should be used, but they frequently are!
Overall if you give an antibiotic to anyone with a sore throat the advantage is marginal. On average the illness is only reduced by 24 hours, so it is barely worth it.

What Causes A Sore Throat?
Sore throat is a symptom of many medical disorders. Infections cause the majority of sore throats and are contagious. Infections are caused either by viruses such as the flu, the common cold, mononucleosis, or by bacteria such as strep, mycoplasma, or hemophilus.
While bacteria respond to antibiotic treatment, viruses do not.

It could be any number of things. If you are prone to seasonal allergies, or just have upper sinus congestion, it could be the drainage running down your throat. If you have been coughing or have been exposed to a virus that could cause it. If you are a smoker and went on a binge, or were yelling. All these things are contributors. If you get a fever or the pain persists and you have difficulty swallowing, go to a family medicine doctor.

A sore throat can be a burning, swollen and scratchy feeling when you swallow. This can be caused by infection from others, swallowing too large pieces of poorly chewed food, thus scratching your throat, as well as spicey foods. Smoking can be a big problem as well as breathing contaminates in your work environment. You can sooth a sore throat by gargling salt water (don't swallow it), taking acetaminophen (no aspirin for children), drinking lots of fluids and resting. See your Dr if you get a fever or throat feels like it is closing and you have a hard time breathing or swallowing.

you own bodies defenses cause a sore throat, not the virus.
your bodies fighting forces zap the virus in such a rudementry way killing not only infected cells but also lots of good ones at the same time. leading to a sore throat.
a sore throat is not the beggining of a cold, its the start of the end of one! as is a blocked nose!
