im not a fan of dark chocolate, i prefer milk chocolate. What won me over to buy these chocolates was that they had french vanilla as a option. so does anyone know other chocolate bars which are french vanilla?

I generally avoid any foods made with artificial sweeteners like this because of the gastric issues. It is safe to eat, in moderation.

Maltitol is a sugar alchohol commonly used to sweeten candies. It's made from maltose, or malt sugar, from starch. The maltose is hydrogenated to make maltitol. It hasabout half the calories of sucrose, or table sugar. The reason it has less effect than it's sucrose equilavent is it's slow absorption in the gut. This is also why it causes so much gastrointestinal problems. I myself would just eat high cocoa dark chocolate that contains regular sucrose. The chocolate you're referring to is safe to eat, as far as we know, but why put your stomach through the torture when a good dark chocolate with a high cocoa percentage is fairly low in carbs, is good for you and you don't need to worry about those unpleasant after effects of sugar alcohols? Just my opinion of course.

This sweetner is made from maltrose (spelling?) but the reason why they use it in diabetic foods is it is metabolized slowly so it doesnt raise your blood sugar very much. It is not non-caloric so you can gain weight eating a lot of it and it can also have a laxative effect. So enjoy your chocolate in moderate quanities. Oops I forgot, to me it has a chalky or waxy taste in some candies (not all).
