Hi i just bought a pack of marlborough 20 smokes.
I am usually a fit person and is good at longer distance 3-4miles running. I am a 16 year old. I have smoked 20 cigarettes already and i was wondering if the effects are permanent. Like for example these things clog up your arteries so you wont be able to carry oxygen as much. Do you think this is temporary? When i stop smoking will it clear away? If not how do you treat it? I am just so worried i willl be out of breath after a few miles. PLZ HELP

Your stamina might be ever so slightly reduced, temporarily, but not by much. Smoking is harmful, but not in this small of an amount. I started when I was 13, and have smoked, on average, half a pack a day since I turned 14. I was perfectly fit through 16 despite that, but now, despite being on my feet for half my workday, I'll occasionally find myself short of breath after just going up a flight of stairs. I'm 22 now.

What you'll need to be careful of is addiction. The direct health effects you'll have from one pack are less than negligible, but one pack is enough to get addicted. If you do feel yourself craving, I'm told chewing gum will help with that. There are also support groups for quitting that you might want to look into, in case you do have problems giving it up.

Best of luck to you, may you succeed where I failed by quitting early!

Do NOT EVER buy another pack much less smoke them. I have been on one and a half packs a day (at least) since I was 12 years old . I have COPD/Emphysema. I STAY sick with Bronchitis and it seems like EVERYTHING sets it off. When I was younger (teens- mid 30's) I could swim lap after lap, run with the best of them, basically do any and all of it, and I did. I can't swim 15 ft or run across a room now I have tried to just give them up, been hypnotized, etc., several times. No luck. IF I live long enough, I will be 52 in July. STOP!

You have no need to worry. 20 cigs (1 pack) won't hurt you. 1 pack a day for 20 years will crispy your lungs but not one pack. Why did you start if you are so concerned? I have taught my 4 and 6 year old this quote "smoking is a dirty filthy habit". Don't start is the easiest way to avoid this stress. Don't let your friends pressure you into smking. Just tell them your mom sniffs you when you come home and you don't want any of her evil looks and smart remarks.

heh, 1 pack huh, i smoked that much just reading your question. stop now and you will be fine, you know that they are about 2% as dangerous as those lying hypocrites would lead you to believe? Not good for you by any means but not as deadly as they say. Ive heard of all these studies that say they cause cancer and its supposed to be the leading cause of death in the country and all that, ive never seen the proof.
Sure someone will say that they have an uncle or brother that smoked and they got cancer but its more than likely that cancer in and of itself is hereditary and can be triggered by certain things, perhaps smoking or more likely smog. I would be more worried if i were you about running near busy streets than a pack of smokes. i would tend to think that sucking in all that crap from a cars exhaust would be worse for you.

if you only do 1 pack, you probably won't notice it, But part of that first cigarette will be in your lungs the day you die
