That's a rather complex problem. There are plenty of web sites that give advice on avoiding heart attacks. Check the American Heart Association's site or surf around a little and see how much information you can come up with.

Factors are mainly hi cholesterol. Esp. LDL. over ~70. Also HDL under ~40. It is now believed that heart attacks can be avoided. And further, that heart attacks may be a thing of the past. Like polio. All the standard risks reduced including, stop smoking, lose wt., exercise, quit sugar( you don't want to get diabetes), get your Blood Pressure under 120/80 (doable) etc. If that does not get the cholesterol below 130-150mg, then( or maybe even best to) start vytorin. It is a combination of statin( blocks production of cholesterol by the liver), and Zetia( blocks absorption of cholesterol from the intestines back into the body). Costs around $70+/mo. One a day. There is some indication that the arteries clogging up from cholesterol may even be reversed. Since 50% of Americans are dying of clogged arteries(from cholesterol), it makes sense to start that medicine before you have a heart attack or stroke.

Be lean:
blood fats, are proportional to body fat

Do not drink to excess:
It causes fatty liver, a risk factor for heart attack

Do not make sudden demands on the heart that may exceed its blood supply:
Get fit slowly and steadily and stay fit so your heart is accustomed to reasonable demand.

Do not get blood clots:
Move about during your day, and do not wear restrictive clothing that may cause pooling of blood in the legs.

Other stuff shown to reduce risk:
2oz and only 2oz of alcohol per day, deep red wine is best.
Eat colorful food, it is full of flavinoids and anti-oxidants.
Bitter chocolate is also full of flavinoids.
Good posture
adequate sleep (check for sleep apnea "snoring")

Stuff that actively causes heart attacks:
smoking
excess drinking
regular use of anti-inflammatories
sudden stress

Weird but true and new stuff:
Asprin may help a little, but other anti-inflammatories appear to increase risk of heart attack
Sleeping with too much light appears to increase risk
Treatment within the last 3 years with certain antibiotics reduces risk up to half.

I would like to answer your second question first. Factors that cause heat attacks are due to blockage in veins. Which prevents free flow of blood to and from heart. Avoiding or reducing the risk has to be calculated on may factors like: heredity, obesity, food habits etc.,If any one or two people have died due to heart attack in your Family (including Father, Mother, Grand father, Grand mother etc.,) chances are more. As a preventive measure normally it is recommended to have ASPERIN 75/80 mg, daily. However safest option is get ECG done regularly. Consult your Cardiologist.

Likley factors would include High colesterol, Hypertension. Usually a heart attack is caused by a blockage and ischemia "lack of oxygen" would cause the heart to have an infarction or "heart attack" Aspirin is an anti platelet wich reduces the chance of developing a clot which reduces your chance of a blockage.

You can reduce your risk of getting heart attacks by living a healthy lifestyle which should start from childhood by:
1. Maintaining a healthy weight
2. Not smoking
3. Eating a healthy balanced diet with less salt and lots of fruits & vegetables for fibre
4. Exercising
5. Reducing stress level
By living a healthy lifestyle, you should be a healthy normal adult with no risk of getting heart attacks. If you have high blood pressure, it must be treated and maintained at normal levels. If you are diabetic, your blood sugars should be controlled at normal levels. High blood pressure and diabetes increase the risk of heart attacks.

Heart attacks can be avoided by limiting your total animal fat/protein intake to less than 6%. Go to Amazon.com and get the book "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell PhD
Not only will it save your life but change your entire outlook on the whole system. If you are serious about avoiding heart disease, a whole foods, plant based diet is the only way. This book spells it out in one immensely comprehensive study. It is very readable and I HIGHLY recommend it.

What Causes a Heart Attack?

Most heart attacks are caused by a blood clot that blocks one of the coronary arteries (the blood vessels that bring blood and oxygen to the heart muscle). When blood cannot reach part of your heart, that area starves for oxygen. If the blockage continues long enough, cells in the affected area die.

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is the most common underlying cause of a heart attack. CAD is the hardening and narrowing of the coronary arteries by the buildup of plaque in the inside walls (atherosclerosis). Over time, plaque buildup in the coronary arteries can:

*

Narrow the arteries so that less blood flows to the heart muscle
*

Completely block the arteries and the flow of blood
*

Cause blood clots to form and block the arteries.
A less common cause of heart attacks is a severe spasm (tightening) of the coronary artery that cuts off blood flow to the heart. These spasms can occur in persons with or without CAD. Artery spasm can sometimes be caused by:

*

Taking certain drugs, such as cocaine
Emotional stress
Exposure to cold
*Cigarette smoking.
