One way of describing American cuisine is a synthesis of cuisines from around the world, a style of cooking that takes something from each immigrant community.
America has alot of famous regional dishes rather than one particular main dish. Jambalaya, gumbos, dirty rice, corn bread, fried chicken all world renowned cajun dishes... cajun food actually comes from french decent when they arrived in america seeking the new world.
All in all"America" doesnt have a national dish asuch but plenty of famous worldwide regional dishes.
Hope this helps:)
American food is so hard to define, many dishes considered American are in fact based upon the cooking traditions of other countries. For example, apple pies, pizza, runzas, chowder, and hamburgers are all either identical to, or derived from, European dishes. Burritos and tacos similarly have their origins in Mexico.
Hot dogs and hamburgers are both based on traditional German dishes, brought over to America by German immigrants to the United States, but in their modern, popular form they are so altered that they can be reasonably considered American dishes.
The cuisine of the East Coast, for example, makes use of fish and seafood to much greater degree than that of the Midwest, where corn and beef were long more readily available. To some degree, easy transportation of perishable foodstuffs has diminished these regional differences in recent years, but many Americans still associate certain foods with specific places, such as steak with Omaha, lobster with Maine, and Blue Crab and Crabcake with Maryland.

America lacks a true "National dish" partly because unlike most other Western nations it is absolutely vast, and composed of an enormous variety of people. In lieu of a cuisine that covers the entire country, there are a multiplicity of regional dishes, in much the same way as the countries of Europe have national dishes.

The South has 'grits', the North-East has 'sliders', Texas has rattlesnake chili, New York State has 'loose meat sandwiches', and so on...

I'm not an American, but when I order or prepare the following food

1) New York Cheese Cake
2) Clam Chowder
3) Buffalo wings
4) Kentucky fried Chicken (Kentucky is in US!)
5) Roasted Turkey for Thanksgiving
6) Haagen-Dazs (Ice-cream that made in US)
7) Deep fried onion rings
8) Lawry's Steak
9) Oreo
10) Boston Lobsters

I always think that they are very "American"

Hamburgers, hotdogs--yes to the apple pie as well--How about nachos?--those are supossed to be Mexican but they are not--they are really Tex-mex..so those fusion foods are probably real American creations--the same with american style pizza--it is not made the the same in italy--so pizza--the way we eat it--all chessy and with thick crusts,etc--is a sort of an American thing/creation too--The doughnut?...French fries--again-southern foods--like pecan pie--etc--that have their own unique twist to it...Since America has so many people from all over--it is influenced by the world--but we always do our own thing and change it up--
