Yeah you're completely right, your friends' diets aren't healthy at all, and they are doing more harm than good. I'm a vegetarian though, and I make sure to eat about four servings of fruits/vegetables a day, and I also eat lots of whole grain bread, drink milk, and eat dairy products and stuff so I can get the most protein I can without eating meat.

So I think it really depends on the vegetarian. Some people who aren't willing to do the work are definitely doing more harm than good, but people who are health-conscious actually can get healthier and lose weight and stuff.

The vegetarians I knew years ago ate lots of beans, tofu, cheese, and, hey, veggies! Many (not all!) of the vegetarians I meet today seem to prefer any product that looks, feels and tastes like meat. They seem to eat very few vegetables. Go figure!

But it's true, a vegetarian needs to balance his/her vegetable diet with proteins. Cheese and eggs can provide some. Those--heavens!--old fashioned beans do that, too.

I agree that you say these people exist and disagree as a general statement...It seems to me the people you know who are vegetarians ..if they were meat eaters would eat meat , cheese, eggs, and sugar ... so I guess this is one step up for them.. I myself am vegan and eat very healthy...mainly because I Love good food ,all vegetables, all fruits, veggie meats , tofus ,whole grains, nuts, ...and all the vegetarians I know eat much healthier then the meat eaters I know.. I guess it is just your associations...

Hey you said it yourself. Their main goal is to just not eat meat. A proper vegetarian should substitute the meat with something healthy and not just cheese or eggs. I think they need a cookbook:)

If they were true vegans, they wouldn't eat ANYTHING that came from an animal, ie. cheese and eggs. There are a lot of 'junk food vegetarians' out there. They say they don't want to eat meat so they only eat junk food. I eat a lot of beans (protein) and rice (grains) and fruits and veggies to get a good dietary intake everyday.

A vegetarian diet like your friends keep isn't proper. You're right in that respect. However, a vegetarian diet with lots of protein such as beans and tofu and fruits and vegetables is actually very beneficial. Vegetarians have to be very conscious about getting enough protein. It sounds like the veggies you know do not get enough.

Many Vegetarians are against the slaughter and horrible conditions animals are kept in and make a point to live with out contributing to the death of animals. Its not always a"healthy" reason. Its very easy to slack and be a junk food vegetarian. It happens. There are tons of carbs out there that are vegetarian friendly!

I definitely agree on you having a very limited knowledge. was that your question??
And who do you address as "you"? Vegetarians? All the vegetarians and vegans I know not only avoid meat (and animal products) but live a healthy life style and do not consume tons of sugar, but grains, vegetables, soy products, beans...just name it.

my daughter and I (she is 12) are vegetarian and are clearly healthier than our peers. We have no weight issues, no skin concerns, no health issues (I was crippled for 12 years before giving up meat, I healed after I gave it up) We both have long, thick, curly, shiney hair, that needs no upkeep besides a simple shampoo. My nails are naturally long and strong. We eat a wide variety of wholesome foods, and are active and athletic. I think vegetarian means more than simply giving up meat. It needs to include a good balance of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, nuts, beans, pulses, and a nice variety of good stuff. We eat very little sugar that is not naturally found in fruit. my daughter is healthier than her meat eating friends, who are on the chubby side, and can rarely keep up with her. Vegetarianism is great if you do it right

Are you sure they live on cheese, eggs and sugar, or do you just assume they do because you have no idea and are full of prejudices? How can anyone live on sugar? Yes, you have indeed a very limited knowledge it seems.
