How mean are some of those answers!?! I think that's a really nice idea and will help other people with the condition (I'm assuming you mean fundraiser for a diabetes charity?). Take your time to think of something really good and special - the charity you're fundraising for might also be able to give you some ideas. Just remember there is no really big hurry for it and give your friend some space and time to grieve too - ie. don't pester her, just let her take her time to get involved. Good luck xx

Maybe you should just leave her alone for a while. If you absolutely need to raise funds to give to her, pass the hat among her friends and say it is for a good cause. Another suggestion would be to hold a simple raffle among your friends. If you state the reason for the raffle, a lot of people can be pretty generous. I also don't understand why it has to be "big". The fact that you had the effort to get her some money is a gesture that is more than enough. She will definitely appreciate that.

He just died? You may want to wait and simply make a point to be there for her after the initial cards and "well wishes" have stopped. You should discuss the fund raising idea with her first to see if she is up to it. There may be opportunity later to do a big fundraiser down the road, but right now she'll need you to support her through her time of grief.

Why does it need to be big? Sounds like she needs to be left alone for now. From the question it seems like you need to please your friend in some way. Being a shoulder is worth more than money.

Was the nan the breadwinner of the family? How does the loss of her nan justify collecting money?

I don't think she needs a fundraiser...money doesn't replace family members. Let her know you are there for her when she needs you.
