Increase your fiber and decrease your fat intake.
Fiber is found naturally in veggies. Eating whole grains is also good. You can take psyillium fiber, which is Metamucil. Psyillium fiber is best for decreasing your LDL which is your "bad" cholesterol. You do, however, have "good" cholesterol which is your HDL. You want your HDL to be above 40 points if you're a man and 50 points if you're a woman. Best way to keep the HDL up is through cardiovascular exercise.

Try Niacin, it has been proven to help. Garlic does nothing, despite some people's claims. Stay away from shellfish and shrimp--very high in cholesterol. The niacin can cause symptoms like a hot flash and hives, but it is temporary and infrequent--something about triggering the release of histomin from the tissues, like an allergic reaction. I have only experinced it once, and since I knew what was going on, it didn't bother me, only lasted 20 min.

In addition to a primarily vegetarian diet combined with plenty of exercise, try cinnamon (1/2 teaspoon per day) and policosanol. It's brought my cholesterol and triglycerides down more than 60 points. I refuse to go on statins because of the horrible side affects.
