Mantoux Test detects tuberculous infection, not disease. In an individual who has not had BCG vaccine and is not from an endemic area, redness with induration of 10 mm. is significantly positive, 1+. 10 to 14 mm. =1+. 15 to 19 mm. = 2+.
20 or more =3+. 5 to 9 mm. is doubtful. It is significant in children less than 4 years old.
To detect TB disease, chest X ray and other investigations are done. If disease is absent and only infection is present, treatment is given for only 6 months.
