Oh my my dad was raised in China and explained to me that the chinese monks were vegetarian and often ate smoked tofu (tempeh) that they made themselves. Its very high in protein and deliciouses. As much protein as meat. He says the monks make the best, he tried it once and said the tempeh their was better than any he ever tasted anywhere for the rest of his life.

Monks are no more likely to suffer from a vegetarian diet, any more than other vegetarians are. I get all of the nutrition I need from a plant based diet. Most people insist that you need meat, but the simple fact is that you dont. Neither humans or animals produce B12 naturally. Animals produce B12 from plant sources, then become a good source of it themselves. People think vegetarians do not get adequate protein, and that is a total myth. Protein comes from non animal source, such as beans, pulses, legumes, brocolli, peanuts, quinoa and other whole grains. What vegetarians to NOT get, are cholesterol, blood, pus, growth hormones, antibiotics, steroids, uric acid, urine, and other stuff found in meat. My daughter is 12, vegetarian, and clearly healthier than her meat eating friends. My daughter is lean, athletic, brown belt in karate, runs great distances with little effort, and is on the honor roll. Her meat eating friends are heavy, sluggish, poor students, and clearly developing breasts at a much too rapid pace-likely due to the growth hormones in commercial milk and meat. I, healed from a 12 year crippling illness after giving up meat. At a recent high school reunion, myself, and two other vegetarians from our class, were clearly healthier, less wrinkled, more toned, and still have our natural hair color. The meat eaters were aged, wrinkled, obese, and generally more pale and weaker looking. Its all proof enough for me

Well they have to include some sort of legume-based protein, such as tofu. I'm sure those monks eat tofu, just not when you saw them. People in India eat other bean-based dishes (lentils etc). Yes you can't live on veggies and rice alone but I don't think anyone lives on that type of diet.

Meat does not give you everything you need either.
A well balanced diet of whole grains, veggies, fruit, nuts, seeds and legumes is what a healthy vegetarian diet consists of.

What makes you think monks don't eat meat or other protein sources? Maybe they only eat it at the monastery, and dont' pay for it when they dine out.
(they dine out?)

Just imagine, cow only eat grass and yet they are strong enough to help the farmers to plough a plantation. We even drink their milk and eat their meat. :P
