Ok, so, my grandfathers been in the hospital for about almost a week now. He is starting to go crazy, he's saying really nutty things. He doesn't eat, he barely gets any fluids in and he hasn't been sleeping. can this be a reason why he is so confused? Because he isn't getting the proper care

Often times when elderly people are hospitalized, they can very easily become confused, agitated, say some off the wall remarks and even have hallucinations, just to name a few. They get off of their normal schedule and are often awake at night and most of the day. They lack proper sleep and rest. If he has been in the ICU or step down unit for part or all of the week, this may also contribute to his confusion. We call this ICU psychosis. Some of the medications that are given in the hospital can also cause confusion and dementia-like symptoms. Once he gets back home and back on his normal schedule and normal medications, he should turn around. Also sometimes when elderly people have infections, such as a urinary tract infection, they can become very confused. I recommend that you discuss these concerns with your grandfather's health care providers and ask them how this can be resolved. Ask questions until you are satisfied with and understand the answers. Good Luck

it is not uncommon for an elder person to become confused in the hospital. Happens frequently, even with those who are normally pretty sharp at home. The different surroundings and events, and different people, along with their age, contributes to this. It has nothing to do with "proper care". It can be very upsetting for the patient and family.

It could be one of his medications, you should speak to his doctor and let them know that this is not his usual behavior.
Many meds have side efffects of confusion or a demented state, and the side effects can be different in different people.
Insist on an answer, sometimes they just think dementia is normal in old people if you don't let them know he is acting strange.

Certain medications can cause mental confusion, especially penicillin.

Maybe it's time for a drug review.
