I am the only vegetarian I know in my country (well, aside from those models and movie stars), and I have never known anyone hating me for being a vegetarian. Most people are at least tolerant, many others wish they had the "discipline" to become one.

It's an unfair and hasty generalization. "Disliking so much" is a strong phrase.

Well, you are the victim of bad press, and I don’t mean the news paper etc it’s just that some vegans/vegetarians try to FORCE their life style on to others. Some V/V’s really look down on non V/Vs. People have heard about this and have seen it on TV more then a few times; so people naturally assume that all V/Vs are that way. After all the TV won’t show a V/V at a restaurant, or out dancing, that’s not news, a bunch of V/V’s protesting is news. So now non V/Vs think all V/Vs are that way. So when they finally meet one they just KNOW what’s going to happen. And how dare you even think about changing them? We’ll show you. Then they get on your case and you’re just standing there wondering what just happened.

It’s not fair that you are judged by the actions of others, but all you can do is live as you see fit and realize that you can’t change people attitude toward all V/V’s but you might change their mind about you.

I am not a vegetarian, but I don't dislike vegetarians or vegans. Most people think that all vegetarians and vegans are vege-nazis, the types who are militant about the fact that they think everyone should be like them, and if you're not, you are morally repugnant. I've not had one come after me, but I've seem them get right up in some peoples' faces. That , to me is totally unacceptable.

Generally speaking:

Maybe because they can be too much TROUBLE sometimes! Have you ever gone out w/ a friends and there's ONE vegetarian in the group? Well you can forget BBQ or just about ANY fast food joint! After driving around for a half hour you all wind up in a sit-down establishment and the whole lunch ordeal winds up taking 2hrs. out of your day rather than 30min.

They're a pain-in-the-*** for caterers as well! SOME of them are self-righteous,.. ESPECIALLY the PETA vegetarians,.. now THEY are the ones that you should just leave at home!

I have a half-dozen dear friends who are Vegetarians,.. and we all get along just fine,..

1. Most omnivores feel that meat eating is
part of the natural order of things and that
we vegs are rebellious for refusing to eat it.

2. Many omnivores feel that vegs are hard to
accommodate at social gatherings.
I think some like to punish us by only
offering salad(lol).

3. Right now I'm wearing a shirt that says,
" One Less Meat Eater". I like the design.
I don't want attention. A lot of omnivores
assume the opposite. It's who I am.
I shouldn't have to keep it in the closet
as if I'm ashamed but some people
just can't handle that.

I am starting to mistrust vegetarians. To the extent that they care about animals and do not want to see them killed, I admire them. However, I sometimes wonder whether their boycott of meat might be done for other reasons. I sure hope it is not being practised as a compensation for doing something that is not upright, moral or virtuous. A lot of vegetarian types come over to me as phony liberals and hypocrites. Often they are too much on the System, so they probably have done someone or others out, or agreed to do malice.

For example, I hope they are not foregoing the eating of animal meat in exchange for engaging in human cannibalism. I hope some of them are not bypassing on drinking milk in compensation for drinking human blood.

People don't like veggies because there is a popular discrimination against them: they assume that all veggies are morally self righteous jerks who condemn others' choices. Most of the time this reactive attitude is unfounded and not grounded in any actual experience; only on hearsay... people have heard other people saying vegetarians are morally self righteous, they reject that sort of behavior, and thus reject vegetarians at large. Then they embellish their beliefs by inventing justifications: 'vegetarians are preachy', 'i hate it when vegetarians preach to me,' 'whenever i deal with vegetarians they are militant animal rights activists' but you'll notice they always speak about vegetarians in general but never actually name a specific person. they are rejecting a group based on what they perceive to be typical group behavior, not individuals based on individual instances. This is the same sort of thing that racists do: "[X group] is always [Y characteristic]" and then... "you're not like the other [members of X group] your one of the GOOD ones... the other ones always [Y]"

...It seems weird to me to straight up hate a group because they are concerned with issues of justice and kindess, don't you think?

people are ignorant and a lot of people automatically dislike anything that isn't "normal" to them. what people don't realize is how easy it is to be a vegetarian now a days...it's not just salads and soup anymore.

They probably feel intimidated for some unknown reason. But it is after all only a very small percentage of people who seem to have a problem, and they can easily be ignored. :)
