My cholesterol is really high, and I'm surprised that when I went to the doctors regularly when I had insurance, that the doctor never mentioned it. I now know that it is unbelieveably high and that scares me. I had problems back in 03 and even went to the hospital thinking I was having a heart attack...the didn't even check me at the hospital and sent me home with a wrong diagnosis. Having learned about my chlosterol last summer, I am trying to figure out what to do since I don't have any insurace. I know mine is hereditary, but any suggestions on what to do to help bring it down, until I can get insurance...thank you in advance for any help. I just hope there will be nothing majorly wrong when I do get back to the doctors.

See if you can get generic prescriptions for cholesterol drugs. Stop eating eggs, meat and cheese and see if that helps. Eat a lot of high fiber grains and fruits and veggies, see if the diet modification helps you out. It could also be a family trait, if that is true there isn't much you can do except try a low fat diet and meds.

First of all, look into getting coverage with Medicaid if you aren't working.
If you are working, check your state's official website to see what health programs they offer ...
NY has a program called Healthy NY that works on a sliding scale depending on your income. This will allow you to get back to the care of a doctor.

The answer from "nagitar" is excellent, that site can be very helpful. Also, if you've already been taking a cholesterol Rx, like Lipitor or Vytorin, check the manufacturer's sites.
www.Pfizer.com, www.Merck.com, etc.
Many pharmaceutical companies offer assistance to people with their medicines, some even give the Rx free if you qualify. Good luck and good health!

Diet will help some. Exercise will help some. Starvation as in the WW ll concentration camps revealed people had no cholesterol in their arteries when autopsied at death. So atherosclerosis is reversible. Egg yolks, butter, fats, raise cholesterol. 'Normal cholesterol in the USA has been around 200Mg's. 50% of Americans are dying from cholesterol clogged arteries(heart, Brain, kidneys, peripheral arteries). I had a cholesterol of 210 and it would not go down with any of the above. I started taking vytorin, after 1+ years it has been staying down around 110-130.
Normal cholesterol in poor countries where food is limited, and no heart attacks are known of, their cholesterol levels are 75-100.

Try a low fat diet. Lots of oatmeal. If yours is hereditary, you may need to go on medication. Tell the doctor you want a double dose so you can cut the pill in half. If he puts you on a 20mg ask for a 40mg. The cost is almost the same and splitting the pill cuts the cost in half. Also ask for a generic brand. Ask for samples too. Doctors get all kinds of samples and they could give you a months worth to get you started.

Though genetics plays a large part in high cholesterol, diet is a major contributor. You need to adapt your diet to include more natural fiber, less fried foods, lots of dark green and leafy vegetables, and way less processed sugars like cakes or cookies. Also you may want to cut way down on the red meat and shelled seafood, both of which increase dietary cholesterol. You may want to buy fish oil or flaxseed to help.

The best diet to use is ADA and just google it! Long before prescription meds people ate more healthy.

I wasn't able to take it because of muscle pains. It is not a good idea to take w/out getting liver function tests done periodically. Ask your doctor about it.
