I can't say I've heard of a cold being mistaken for diabetes before, you learn something new every day.
Common signs include:
• Increased thirst
• Going to the loo (for a wee) all the time – especially at night
• Extreme tiredness
• Weight loss
• Blurred vision
• Genital itching or regular episodes of thrush
• Slow healing of wounds
I know the main symtom I experienced was the unquenchable thirst, and even now when my blood sugars are high I get the thirst and blurry vision.

My daughter who is now thirteen was diagonised with Type 1 diabetes 4 years ago aged 9 her symptoms were; Waking up a the same time every night needing the toilet, drinking more than normal, loss of weight, paleness, being grumpy. I'm pretty sure a 1 year old would experience similar symptoms my daughter also had thrush(because of the sugar in her urine) so this would be pretty evident in a 1 year old. My daughter was only diagonised after I took her to the doctor so in your shoes I'd take your child straight to the doctors for a urine test. Hope this helps and Good Luck.

Its not very likely, common things occur commonly. The average 1 year old gets 7 viruses a year (mistake to call them all colds though.) So that is pretty likely. Try being honest with your GP, however good he is, he probably isn't a mind reader!
If you are worried your child his diabetic tell your GP! even if it is an unlikely diagnosis, I am sure your GP would be happy to check a urine sample for sugar, and this won't involve hurting your child. Why not bring a sample with to make it easy then and there?

Eating and drinking everything in sight and losing weight is a symptom that my daughter had. She suffered also with asthma. Complete dehydration could send your child into a diabetic coma. Insist that your child be checked for diabetes immediately.

First, if you are wondering whether your toddler has diabetes in the first place, here are some signs to look for:
•often complains of feeling thirsty
•hungry more often
•suddenly loses weight
•urinates more than usual, diapers more wet than usual
•occasional fruity smelling breath
If you notice any of these symptoms in your child, discuss with your doctor the possibility you have a toddler with diabetes.

-sweet urine--it will attract ants
-fruity breath due to release of acetone that the body is releasing
-frequent urination
-skin not very turgid (does it take long for the skin to 'snap' pack if u pull it?
-feeling thirsty and drinking often
-hypokalemic (loss of postassium)
-sudden weight loss
-feeling tired and sluggish--slow in responsiveness
--it seems that ur child may have type 1 diabetes--but further symptoms need to be elicted or else a proper test, detecting insulin levels needs to be done.
i doubt it is just a cold.

It might sound a bit silly, but I find symptoms for high and low blood sugars resembles; a drunk. Someone who's blood sugars are out of whack might seem like they are intoxicated. Ex: Slurred speech, thirst, hunger, nausea, irritability, decreased levels of consciousness, a change in behavior.
In a one year old, he might ask for water and/or food. He will be more irritable, will look sleepy. There will be a change in his behavior. Theses symptoms might be more obvious after a big meal or after a night sleep.

I suggest you check out webmd.com for symptoms for a 1 year old. Better yet, I suggest you take him/her to the MD immediately if you suspect it. In adults, the most common symptoms are frequent urination, dry mouth and thirst.
