The IDC (International Diabetes Center) teaches the following: before(70 - 110) and after (under 140 2 hours after eating) meals, after exercising (can bring your sugars up or down) and at bedtime. If your fasting sugar(atleast 6 hours) was 170, it's time to get an Hgb A1C done. That checks what your sugar levels have been over the last 3 months. The goal is to be under 7. It's the only blood sugar test you can't cheat at. I got my Type 2 diagnosis with a fasting sugar of 126. Good Luck!

Diabetics need always to keep this in mind. Eat the same amount each day and at the same time each day. Overeating or undereating will cause the blood sugar levels to change drastically. If you plan to do a lot of exercise eat a snack before you exercise and test your blood after the exercise to see if you might need another snack. The same applies to extra food. If you eat an extra big meal, then extra insulin will be needed after you eat. So check your blood sugar about an hour after eating the big meal and if blood sugar is excessively high you may need a unit of insulin. If this occurs quite often ask the endocrinologist for a sliding scale for giving extra insulin. Low blood sugar needs extra food. High blood sugar needs extra insulin. This is the reason diabetics should try to eat the same amounts at each meal and 3 meals a day with 2 snacks-afternoon & before bed. To me blood testing is always best 30 minutes before meals.

Unfurtunately the blood meters we use at home can have a variance of as much as ten percent so a 120 and a 110 is right in line with that. They are a good guide but not 100 percent accurate.

In my experience with my Grandfather we were always told by his Endrocolnologist to test his sugar in the morning whe he wakes and at night before he goes to bed. I really do think that it is best for you to contact your Doctor though because every patient is different and you need to make sure that you are doing what is right for your body. God Bless you and I hope your back to feeling better soon!

test in the morning, before & after each meal (this will help you get a sense of what effect certain foods have on your blood sugar), and any time you aren't feeling up to par. to help elongate and not spike your bs, be sure to eat whole grains and try to avoid simple sugars (candy, dessert, packaged snacks and breakfast foods)

Have a talk to your doctor about this testing regime. There is a problem if you test with this much variation in the course of a couple of minutes. I would contact the supplier about this last question.
