Urethral swabs are used for gonorrhea, chlamydia and NGU tests.
HOWEVER, urine tests are just as good for detecting these infections. So if your doc recommends the scary swab, find another doctor who will give you the urine test, instead.

Tom, your answer is BOLLOCKS and the journal Sexually Transmitted Diseases proves it.
The Effect of Urine Testing in Evaluations of the Sensitivity of the Gen-Probe APTIMA(R)Combo 2 Assay on Endocervical Swabs for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae: The Infected Patient Standard Reduces Sensitivity of Single Site Evaluation.
Sexually Transmitted Diseases. 31(5):273-277, May 2004.
The article shows that while your means of testing (Gen-Probe) is more senitive than urine culture, for all tests, urine culture had the best specificity.
Secondly, swabs are a MAJOR barrier to testing for many men. They'd rather avoid testing, or let an infection persist than let a doctor stick a swab into their urethras. It's better to sacrifice a few percentage points of sensitivity in order to enable more STD testing than to miss a large swath of the disease reservoir because they're afraid of the pain.
Lastly, even if it's faster to run a PCR than a culture, there's ALWAYS going to be a delay in getting results back because the specimen has to be sent ot the lab, and then the result has to be returned. Takes a few days no matter what.

Sounds like the Gen-Probe for gonnorhea and chlamydia. The test uses DNA technology to identify either or both of these infections much more quickly and accurately than culture techniques which can take several days to weeks before a definitive answer is obtained. And contrary to the previous answer, urine tests are absolutely worthless for this kind of testing.
