Quite the opposite. Caffeine is chemically related to theophylline, which is used to treat asthma. Clinically, people with asthma report breathing better after ingesting caffeine.

I found a scientific reference for an analysis of research involving this question.

"Six trials involving a total of 55 people were included. The studies were all of cross-over design and of high quality. In comparison with placebo, caffeine appears to improve lung function for up to two hours after consumption. Forced expiratory volume in one minute showed a small improvement up to two hours after caffeine use (standardised mean difference -0.73, 95% confidence interval -1.20 to -0.25). Mid-expiratory flow rates also showed a small improvement with caffeine and this was sustained up to four hours. REVIEWER'S CONCLUSIONS: Caffeine appears to improve airways function modestly in people with asthma for up to four hours. People may need to avoid caffeine for at least four hours prior to lung function testing."

Hope that helps.

I am suffering from a severe bout of ashthma, illness, RAD, whatever right now, and I just got out of the hospital. My doctors have me a a ton of meds, but said to go ahead and drink as much tea as I want. The caffine is good, as well as the hot liquid, but they said that I can't have any sugar. Steroids raise your blood sugar ALOT, so I have to drink it with slpenda or nothing, at least while I continue to be on high does of steroids.

I am assuming coffee would be the same. I know the more I drink, the better I personally feel.

I hope this helps!

Hi,
I can't fully answer your question for you since everyone's body is different from eachother but I can tell you that both of my brothers' (twins) suffer from Asthma and they both got kicked out of the Military because of it. Anyway, they both drink coffee and neither one of them suffer from any problems because of coffee. I guess their Asthma is more tolerant to coffee more than it is to the Military.
Use your own judgement on the coffee issue and see if your body can handle it or not.

My husband has had asthma since he was 6 months old, and he drinks coffee all the time, and has never complained that it bothered his lungs.
As for the other poster who said to drink tea, tea has caffeine too, so it wouldn't make a difference.

So go ahead, get your java fix!

I think hot liquids help but I don’t know if the caffeine in the coffee is good for asthma. I think drinking tea is your best bet!
