For the past couple of weeks i have been waking up at around 5am unable to breathe with a very tight chest, its so bad that i have to get up and wait for the wheezing to subside (about 2 hours).
Am i working too hard or does anyone recognise these symptoms, i did suffer from asthma as a child, has it come back?My wife says i should go to the hospital, but you know what men are like.

4-5 am is the body's lowest period in its circadian rhythm. Body steroid level are at their lowest and asthma attacks, heart attacks and most deaths occur!

What you are describing sounds very much like a recrudescence of your asthma.

Either way these episodes need investigation and treatment. If they are asthma occurring with this level of severity they are potentially dangerous and by the way will definitely need more that Salbutamol/Ventolin to treat them.

Your wife is right you are being foolish, see your doctor!

Hi John

Sorry to hear about your tight, wheezy chest. Your symptoms are indicative of asthma, which can be treated by your GP, usually by prescribing a Becotide or Ventolin inhaler. These open up the bronchioles in the lungs and facilitate easier breathing while eradicating the tightness and wheeziness.

Best wishes, J

Listen to your wife and get your @rse down there now. This could be asthma or do you smoke as this could be a cause of smoking. I would go straight to your hospital or ring NHS Direct on 08454647 to get some advice.

it sounds like asthma, go to the doctor he can give you inhalers that will easily get rid of these symptoms
could be that something in your environment has changed (more dust, different washing powder) and you are reacting to it, also stress and worry can bring on attacks
