my 11 granddaughter got type 1 diabetes when she was eight, has an insulin pump now but continues to be a brittle diabetic with many trips to the ER for DKA. she is extremely good with her diet measures everything and works hard at it. six months ago she had 8 grandmal seizures in 12 hours in the hospital but it was not caused by her blood sugar. the docs don't know what caused them. the seizures have been controlled well with Trileptal. does any one know of a child on this med? has it caused behavior problems? the doctors say no, but since she has gone on this med she is unbearable...no punishment works for her. at this time she has lost all privilages and the only things left in her room are her bed and linens. she has had spankings, not effective. she is in weekly therapy. we cannot find the problem and i don't think she knows either. she is very intelligent and on the student counsel, liked by everyone until recently, most shun her now even the friends since preschool. Ideas?

I took Trileptal for many years for chronic nerve pain unrelated to my diabetes (it was from a back injury). I didn't have trouble with my personality when I was on it, but I DID have trouble when I took Neurontin, which is the same type of drug. It is possible your granddaughter is sensitive to the medication and she is having some sort of reaction. I agree that maybe she should see another physician for her seizures. There are many other meds used to treat seizures, and I am certain there is one out there she will respond better to. Best wishes to you all.
