In the U.S., you need 4 years of high school, 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, 6 years of general surgery residency, 2 years of cardiothoracic/cardiovascular surgery fellowship. And, of note, about 24 people applied for the fellowship in cardiovascular surgery this past year. Next year, it is anticipated that less than 20 people will apply. This is because in 10 years or so, all the procedures these surgeons perform will be done with balloon devices, stents, and robotically.

4 years of undergrad school or Bachelor's Degree. 4 years of medical school. That's just school, but you have to do 4 years of residency and take tests before you can become a full fledged heart surgeon and practice.

To be a heart surgeon you would have to get a doctorate so you would have to go eight years.

After you graduate from high school you have 4 years of pre med school, five years of medical school, four years of residency training, two years of Thoracic surgery, and about six months of vascular surgery. It's about 14-16 years after you get out of high school. That's at least what I've learned.

4 years college
4 years medical school
I believe the residency in cardiothoracic surgery is another 5 years on top of that.

you will need a minimum of 8 years of school after college. good luck if this is what you are choosing to do. it is a great deal of work, but the rewards of saving one's life are immense. there are many scholarships and grants available to help offset the cost of your education.
