I'm new with Lantus insulin and my doctor knows nothing. Does anyone know the profile of this medicine, how long it works, when does it peak, is there a graph I could look at?

Lantus is a long-lasting insulin without peaks, and provides coverage for 24 hours. It is often used in conjunction with a quick-acting coverage insulin, sucn as Humalog, or Novalog, on sliding scale, for those occasional peaks in glucose levels at mealtimes. My question to you, though, is who prescribed it?Was it your primary physician? My doctor wanted to change me over to Lantus about 5 years ago, but was unsure about dosing, and referred me to an endocrinologist, who are more experienced with this, as it's their specialty in practice. If your doctor is unsure, or doesn't know the medication, ask for a referral or recommendation.

You must be used to NPH insulin. Unlike NPH, lantus insulin does not peak at all, it has a pretty flat curve over 24 hours, so you take it once daily, and we usually follow fasting glucose levels to determine if the dose needs to be adjusted (I'm assuming that you're either taking an oral hypoglycemic or insulin with meals to give you postprandial coverage).
The nice thing about Lantus is that it gives you a baseline insulin coverage, but because it has no peaks, it's not good as a single agent as it cannot control the glucose peaks that happen after meals.
If you want to see a graph, just google "lantus, graph" and you should be able to find something (I don't have the links, but that's how I found it) though basically what it shows is a basically flat line over the 24 hour graph.

Lantus is a long-acting basal insulin that helps keep your blood sugars level throughout the whole day. I'm on a basal-bolus program -- I take Lantus every night and Humalog before each meal. I believe someone else already stated this, but it lasts for about 24 hours and never peaks. It's also pretty flexible... you don't have to take it exactly at the same time every day, as long as it's pretty close within a few hours.

I started using Lantus 4 years ago...best thing since sliced bread. The greatest thing about Lantus is it never peaks...it's consistant for 24 hours...my Dr. put me on it because I was experiencing alot of low blood sugar episodes. Along with the Lantus he put me on fast acting, short lived Humalog. It is impossible for me to experience a low blood sugar so low that I am incoherent. The humalog works quickly, take it just before you eat, and it's effect is gone within an hour...the Lantus never peaks they, together, are WONDERFUL!!!

I take 30 units of Lantus at dinner time. The insulin is a long acting insulin that is slowly absorbed into your body. I stick myself in my stomach.

Good luck.

I have been on it for about 4 yrs. It lasts 24 hrs. after injection. And I get fewer low blood sugars. I suggest that you consider a new doctor if he does not know or explain your medications to you. The information should be on the inside of the box and on the information when the pharmacist fills the scripts. Talk to your pharmacist.

My 14 year old son uses this , I do not have to worry during the night if he goes to low or to high, I use to check him at 3am every morning when he was younger. On this one he is less likely to go to high or to low.
