Like a lot of other diseases it can be controlled. Most people have problems because they don't follow the doctors orders.

I've been told that diabetes skips a generation, so you might not have it. When I was diagnosed, I only wanted to eat fruit, I would consume entire gallons of orange juice by myself in a sitting, I had to pee every 15 minutes, and my vision went to hell in a handbasket. I also felt terrible, was sleeping more often than not, and I didn't even have the strength to walk up the stairs. If any of this seems familiar, go to the doctor immediately!
Also, if you make sure to take care of yourself and always take your insulin, you'll be alright. Keep in mind that if you are diagnosed, it's a lifelong disease and it'll never just 'go away', though it'll get easier to handle with time.
PS -- both type 1 and 2 diabetes can happen any time, though type 1 is most common in children... I was diagnosed with type 1 when I was 17, so don't rule it out! Type 2 usually only occurs in extremely obese children -- I'm talking about 22 stone (300lb) children!

There are a few symptoms for the onset of diabetes:
1. Frequent urination/going pee a lot.
2. Fruity smelling breath/ breath smells like you just drank an alcoholic beverage.
3. Major craving of sweets all the time.
4. Not feeling well over all.
There are more. Go to the ADA.com site and look them up. They will tell you further what to look for so if you get the symptoms you will know when to go to the doctor. Otherwise try not to worry. Sorry about your Mum.

According to recent studies conducted by the Pritikin Longevity Center, diabetes starts from too much fat in the diet and insufficient exercise, not malfunction of the pancreas as previously thought. The pancreas continues to produce insulin when you have diabetes but the body becomes insulin resistant. Research has shown that over 90% of diabetes cases can be TOTALLY CORRECTED with diet and exercise. That means that you don't have to have limbs removed due to diabetes-induced gangrene. You don't have to go blind or suffer cardiovascular abnormalities because of diabetes. You can actually REVERSE some of these conditions with diet (nutrition, not weight loss) and exercise, and the removal of parasites and candida.
Watch the 8-minute non-profit video http://www.rawfor30days.com/view.html , about diabetes diet.
Best of luck.

Talk to your doctor, or school nurse, or the nurse at the local health department about your worries. If you eat right, which means little junk food, very few soft drinks and candy, plenty of vegetables and lean meat, and exercise, you should be fine. A doctor or nurse can advise you about your diet, and check your blood sugar and run some tests to check your health. It's good that you know you are at risk and want to take care of yourself, but don't upset yourself a lot about it. Smoking and other things your relatives may have done can also contribute to poor health. Get yourself checked out for your own peace of mind.

I think if you were going to get Type I diabetes, you would already have it by now. If you're worried about Type II diabetes the best thing you can do for yourself is to get exercise at least 30 minutes a day (walking, etc) and try to not eat fast food. If you do these two things, I seriously think you will be fine.

You won't be getting it anytime soon. Type 2, which is hereditary, doesn't appear until the 40's usually. If you eat right exercise and do all that good stuff, you can delay it even more. Sometimes that is all that keeps it at bay, and sometimes a pill may be needed. If you're overweight now and eating poorly, you may get it sooner than expected.
