Yes, you can get an STD from oral sex. You should be checked, of course, just in case. I know when I started dating my current g/f she said she'd give me oral...if I wore a condom. She insisted on flavored ones, and it was quite hot too.
Years ago a girl told me she did have oral with some guys because she didn't want to get pregnant. That was a good idea, but only if you knew they were clean. Otherwise, the condom is your best friend.
